FEATURE: Japanese Anime Magazine Retrospective: "OUT" in 1985

The year of Z Gundam and magical girls

Obviously, the most featured anime by the OUT magazine's 1985 issues was Mobile Suit Z Gundam, the first sequel to the original Mobile Suit Gundam. It became the top-rated TV series in the history of the Gundam franchise (excluding re-runs). The commercial success of Z Gundam made all of other following Gundam series  possible.

Ah the Dirty Pair. ^_^ The memories. My first exposure to them was in the 90s through the magazine Manga Mania and the Dirty Pair manga that was printed in them done by Adam Warren and Torren Smith. I still have them ^_^ heh. I want to buy new digital copies of Adam Warrens and Toren Smiths Dirty Pair. They were so funny with all the little tiny notes inside the drawings. Made me laugh so much.
I really like these, please keep them coming!
AGREED. GIMME MORE, PLEAZE!! :)
Thanks! I will keep posting every week till the 1988 issues.
Maybe I will contribute with my issues from Newtype from 1988+ I'm missing a number of issues from the magazines first couple of years, but have a decent run from early 87 until sometime in the 90s. I remember how huge Arion was when it was released, but sadly Yas is pretty much unknown outside of the Gundam circle.
Arion will be appeared in my next post (^-^)
I guess my birth anime is Magical Princess Minky Momo :X
Man, I keep forgetting how gorgeous Akemi Takada's art was. It's a shame she doesn't draw anymore.
That is hasty conclusion. Granted that Akemi Takada is not active in animation, but she has been doing designs and illustrations. She released a fairy tale book couple years ago. You gotta look around.
She released an artbook "la madonna" in 2009, and was doing book signings with it. Though I do hope she does another soon.
I should have been more specific. It's a shame she doesn't draw anime character designs/posters anymore. Not since like 2001 or so, last I checked.
Gotta love anime magazines-less significant now but still great. Never heard of this one-looks cool!
I used watch these shows when I was a kid...

tis funny how the anime back then looks better then what most of the Americans make noways. Not saying everything is shit but just most of it is.
serves to remind us what kind of disgusting period were the 80s. the 'lost era' in everything. except computers.
huh? 80s anime still looks better than 90% of the bland anime out right now. Hell, music was better then too. Were so dry on talent these days that djs are considered stars now..
These look nice. They make me laugh though. So many people say that moe is some 2000s invention and is ruining anime yet a lot of these covers from the 80s feature character designs that would be undeniably moe if a modern anime used them. I wonder if the fandom back then was saying this stuff was ruining anime as well.
SHERLOCK HOUND!! I LOVE looking at retro cartoon artwork and retro magazines. Thanks for the post, Crunchy!
You're welcome! More to come (^-^)
Thanks for reminding me that I am old!!I love seeing these. I remember Zeta Gundam really well. I was drawing on Gundam versions on my note books in school long enough to get into trouble with my teachers back then.
Yay, my birth issue was Quattro Bajeena from Mobile Suit Z Gundam. That is perfect since I own and enjoyed Zeta and Quattro is one of the best characters in that series.
Loving the throwbacks!
Man, anime used to look a lot more fun.
It's so awesome to see magazines from before I was born :DD
This bring back a lot of memories. I remember that in order to watch this OAVs and TV series I had to order VHS fansubs from a Canadian fansub group. US hadn't really kicked off on the fansub scene yet. Good times.
Old anime's the BEST, damn it!
Ahh, the '80s.
perfect to know what series what up and up in the year i was born. I will look most of these up now... hell i have watched half of them already lol
Designs were generally more imaginative and beautiful back then than they are these days.
perhaps but they still had their moe~ shows, action series and romance/drama. You should take a look at another or stein's gate for decent character designs from this century.
Dirty Pair. Brings back memories. :D Loved the series.
I'm so envious that my early childhood was rather shallow in anime exposure. I forget what my sources were before in the early 90s, but it certainly would have been more fun to have had these around.
gundam zeta,votoms and megazone 23 i love:p
What? Urusei Yatsura existed in 1985? I thought that series was from the 90s.
Wow, Bright is really... angry at that hamburger.
