Fanart Friday returns, more than ready for a second helping of... whatever that delicious-smelling stuff is. Last week, we sharpened our swords and undertook duels of honor with our favorite samurai, but this week we're not making war... we're making food. Cooking manga is more common than cooking anime, and most of those sadly don't make it overseas--which is a shame, because cooking is awesome, and if you can add likeable characters and a great story to the highly technical and dramatic world of cooking, then all the better! This week, we'll celebrate our favorite characters from cooking manga and anime, as well as our favorite cooking (and eating!) aficionados from everything else!
If anything, this has taught me a valuable lesson... never write while hungry.

Y'know what sounds really good right now? Some okonomiyaki. Calling it "Japanese pizza" is doing the stuff a disservice. Ranma 1/2's Ukyo would make one hell of a huge okonimiyaki with her gigantic spatula... but it would still never be as big as this one!
Or some ramen... I'm surprised that Ramen Fighter Miki never really caught on here. It's a riotous running comedy where the delivery route is the ultimate battlefield.
On the other hand, I made my peace with Addicted to Curry never coming Stateside. Man, those curry recipes, though... curry's such a simple dish that it's very, very hard to mess up. Addicted to Curry even came with recipes that let you try out the stuff you saw in the manga!
So back when I was running my college's anime club, we were talking about new titles and had the website for Bartender up on the projector. My friend John walks in, looks at the screen (which shows main character Ryu mixing a drink) and asks "What's Bartender about?" GEE I HAVE NO IDEA
With ComicsOne gone (and then DRMaster dying shortly after), it pretty much means we're not getting any more Iron Wok Jan here in America--oh sure, the first series' 27 volumes are out, but we aren't getting the sequel! So far, anyways--one can always hope.
Y'know, I don't have that much of a sweet tooth, but the pastries in Yumeiro Patissiere look damn delicious. I actually really liked this series!
You know who the real heroes of Yakitate! Ja-Pan are? It's the translators over at Viz, who took the manga's nightmarish Japanese puns and actually made similar puns work in English, preserving the feel of the original but in a new language.
Out of all of these, the one anime that always, always makes me hungry while watching it is Toriko. A lot of that has to do with the crazy islands made of food with logs of spiced hickory sausage rolling down rivers of maple syrup to beaches made out of pancakes and fluffy scrambled eggs and [Ed. note- Nate just drowned in his own drool, we'll get back to you once he's conscious again.]
Mexico's two Street Fighter representatives take a moment to chill. I would never have guessed that luchadore super-chef El Fuerte would be so fascinated by watermelon!
Okay, so BEN-TO! isn't so much about cooking as it is about smart shopping (and fighting for the best deals), but some of the food is really worth fighting over. And people wonder why I'm always late to FanimeCon--I'm over at Mitsuwa hoarding kara-age.

Cooking is serious business--anybody who's read Cooking Master Boy can attest to that. Maybe we should still go by the "no goofing off in the kitchen or you die" rules today--just think! No Bobby Flay, no Emeril Lagasse, no Guy Fieri! I'm in heaven!
Of course, we'd keep Giada de Laurentiis and her awesome cleavage smile.
Ahh, Cooking Mama. You were the best when it came time to take a break from the massacre of countless aliens in Contra 4. Also, it showed me a really cool way to cut onions that I never would have thought of otherwise.
That's the spirit, gentlemen! So you have a Gourmet Hunter like Toriko paired up with a living garbage disposal like Big Boss... anything is fair game when it comes to their next meal. Godspeed, you poor little guinea pig.
I don't think I'd want Sanji having his own Cooking Mama-style game. Mama is nice and will "make it all better." Sanji will boot you out of the kitchen and do it himself.
And that's all for this week! Make sure to drop by next time on Fanart Friday, where we take a look at all the bespectacled badasses (and otherwise loveable characters) who need to wear corrective lenses! That's right, megane fans, we'll be featuring your favorite glasses-wearing characters!
As always, thank you for coming by to check out Fanart Friday. Your art's always welcome here, so if you want your work to appear in a future Fanart Friday, just send it my way! Happy Easter, and see you all next week!
