FEATURE: Fanart Friday, One Lucky Bachelor(ette) Edition

Dating like a normal person is for wimps--these series give all options right away

Fanart Friday returns, having taken all its lessons about relationships from Flavor of Love. Last week, we took a look at the world of evolutions, battles, and hidden moves of Pokémon! This week, we're checking out a completely different subset of anime, one filled with romance, danger, and terrifying women--we are, of course, talking about harem series!

It's not just the "one guy and ten girls" variant, either--we'll get a look at some of our favorite otome (reverse harem) titles, as well as series who hide their true harem selves behind a facade. Now, let's jump headlong into a world of ridiculous overreactions and borderline polygamy!

DISCLAIMER:  None of the art presented is the property of myself or Crunchyroll.  All characters and series are tm and © their respective creators and corporate owners.  All art is the creative property of their respective artists.  Any artists who wish to have their work removed from this article may contact me, and appropriate action will be immediately taken.

To-Love-Ru was a surprising follow-up to Black Cat. While Black Cat had plenty of fanservice, I was nowhere near prepared for what Kentarou Yabuki was going to unleash in the pages of Jump.

ffhyd

by 涼風ゆや

Okay, I'll be honest: Boys Over Flowers only sooorta counts. But it still follows a lot of reverse-harem tropes--one girl, four guys (even though she only becomes romantically involved with two of them) and lots of hijinx.

fflovehina

by ao2

For a lot of people, Love Hina is the great-granddaddy of harem titles. It's a goofy, fun series that occasionally goes way off the rails and has a girl beat a guy half to death because of an accident. Chill the hell out, lady.

ffkanokon

by SHUKO

Kanokon main character, whatever your name is (because harem leads are pretty much all the same, male or female), I would never ever wish to be in your shoes. I have some advice about that fox goddess who keeps trying to jump your bones while you're sleeping: call the police.

ffschoold

by 癒李柚

School Days taught us a very important lesson: trying to juggle girls harem-style has consequences. In the real world, it usually involves a lot of hurt feelings and broken hearts, but School Days took it a step further and got all Se7en on us.

ffbleach

by 九条高尾

Oh, don't even try and argue this one with me! When Bleach isn't about magic ghost samurai fighting for no discernible reason, it's about Ichigo and how everybody's sooooo in love with him. Rukia, Orihime, Nel, Renji, Byakuya, Kenpachi... the list goes on and on!

fftenchi

by へる

Has there ever been a more perfect piece of Tenchi Muyo! fanart? Aside from that, I have a confession to make: I know nobody likes her, but I'll always like Ayeka more than Ryoko. She's stuck-up and prissy and a total bitch, but she's fun!

ffhostclub

You can never get enough Ouran High School Host Club. The adventures of a broke-ass girl pretending to be a boy while surrounded by rich boys (who all like her to varying degrees) never gets old.

ffshuffle

by xDestinyStarzx

Say what you will about it as a series, but at least Shuffle! was honest in its advertising tagline: "Which girl would you choose?" I do feel the main character's pain, though... having that many people chasing after you all the time would get pretty irritating.

ffrosario

by でーぜる

I'm just full of anime-related confessions today: I've never watched Rosario & Vampire, and I've only read a little of the manga. Am I missing out? Is it any good, Breast Laser Beams and all? Let me know in the comments!

ffyamanade

by ichigonogenki

Who said fanart just has to be two-dimensional drawings? This artist's kickass Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge (known here as The Wallflower) keychains definitely count! I really need to read more of this series--it was hilarious as hell, with poor Sunako being surrounded by handsome men who sought to "cure" her terminal shyness and misanthropy.

ffclannad

by yapeng

YES FINE I GET IT, "Am I kawaii? Uguu~" is from Kanon, not Clannad, but you can understand my confusion. Still, KEY's standout designs (and following the tried-and-true formula of one dude, several girls) worked all the same, and fans ate it up!

ffhanakimi

by オヤナ

Why in the name of all that is holy has Hana-Kimi (Hanazakari no Kimitachi e) never received an anime adaptation?

ffangelique

by カランコ

I think what I liked the most about what little I saw of Angelique (or Neo Angelique Abyss, in this case) was how honest it was. It was hilarious how this magical quest to protect some girl with guns and super powers was TTLY RLY SRS BSNS, and the characters treated every psychotically strange plot twist with perfect, hammy gravitas.

ffdacapo

by 藤崎鏡也

No pretense here: never watched Da-Capo, but my friend suggested I include it here. That must be a really popular haircut over in harem/romance anime land.

ffkinironocorda

by ドナ

As much as I liked La Corda d'Oro, I was always a little disappointed that Kahoko was never gonna end up with the awesome trumpet-playing guy whose name escapes me. Then again, I never finished the first season, so maybe she does? Aah, whatever, I'll get around to watching it again at some point.

sakurawars

by SEIYOU

While Sakura Wars didn't make an appearance in the last Natestalgia, all of you who asked for it have had me humming the opening theme for the last couple days! Rest assured, you'll see the cutest armored battalion ever show up in Part 2 of the Pre-2000 OP/ED Natestalgia!

fffoz

by あいそめや

Y'know the only thing that makes me sad about this beautiful Familiar of Zero piece? No Kirche. :(

ffelhazard

by dukkeofdeath

Holy crap, now this is some amazing fanart! I... think I want to go watch some El-Hazard now. Another thing I find awesome: he used Prismacolors (my marker of choice), instead of the fan-favorite Copics.

fftoheart

by もんりーまさ

Just in case any of you were wondering where all the To Heart fanart was.

And that's everything for this week! Sure, I played fast and loose with genre conventions, but in the end, if it walks like a duck, etc. you know the drill. Be sure to swing by next time, as we celebrate the release of The Avengers with a 100% Marvel-themed Fanart Friday, where I'll be contributing some art as well!

Like I keep saying, your art is always welcome here, so feel free to send me links to your work and I'll make sure it shows up in a future installment. Stick figures, crayon drawings, videotaped tableaus vivant--it's all welcome! Thanks again for checking out Fanart Friday--enjoy your weekend, everybody!
