FEATURE: Fanart Friday, Weapon of Choice Edition

You can go with this, or you can go with that

Fanart Friday returns, and its signature weapon is the spaghetti sauce that's been sitting in its fridge for over a year. Last week, we cuddled up with our favorite mascot-type characters, but this week is hard and sharp as steel! This week, we'll be taking a look at our favorite signature weapons from anime, games, movies and more, as well as the characters who wield them!

Just keep in mind that I haven't seen everything, and certain characters had to be omitted due to space concerns or just plain not finding any fanart of them. With that, let's get this show on the road!

DISCLAIMER:  None of the art presented is the property of myself or Crunchyroll.  All characters and series are tm and © their respective creators and corporate owners.  All art is the creative property of their respective artists.  Any artists who wish to have their work removed from this article may contact me, and appropriate action will be immediately taken.

X is armed with all kinds of weapons from all kinds of enemies, from flamethrowers to a mostly-useless Aiming Laser, but there's no arguing with the utilitarian usefulness of the X-Buster. The same goes for his pluckier, friendlier predecessor.

This is all going to end very badly in about ten seconds when Zelda transforms into Sheik. Then again, Peach is pretty dangerous with her sentient parasol Perry, so...

Okay, so other members of Team Urameshi were armed--Hiei had his sword, Kurama had his Rose Whip, and Yusuke had his, uh... finger gun... but I've always been partial toward Kuwabara and his Spirit Sword.

I don't know what I can say about Upotte!! that hasn't already been said, but yeah... only in Japan. Only in Japan will you see a show about anthropomorphized guns who go to school. Besides, the M14 deserves classier representation than a schoolgirl. I'm thinking the Ann Margret type here.

Soul Eater took a second for me to wrap my head around when I first saw it. So we've got a cast of great characters, and their weapons are also part of the cast, which is pretty awesome. This series has a real blatant RPG feel to it that really works in its favor.

So a quick Japanese lesson: Inuyasha's special can't-hurt-humans-but-definitely-kills-demons sword is written in Japanese as 鉄砕牙 (てっさいが), romanized as "Tessaiga." And yet, in both the English-language manga and anime, everybody freakin' calls it "Tetsusaiga," which is a real mouthful of a (slight) misreading!

Durarara!!'s Shizuo is crazy-strong and uses his environment as a weapon--and in Ikebukuro, the environment consists of sign posts, vending machines, and other hilariously heavy assorted improvised weapons.

Without a doubt the most coolly lethal character on this list, Golgo 13's Duke Togo and his trusty modified M16A2 are a staple of anime and manga. Almost every Golgo 13 story is roughly the same, but it always ends up being entertaining and fun while being incredibly gritty (and kind of ridiculous) at the same time.

Mousse may be Ranma 1/2's master of hidden weapons, but Ukyo here arms herself with a giant spatula. Creativity counts!

I'm a big fan of the TRIGUN anime waiting five episodes before Vash used his signature .45 Long Colt AGL--it showed us that he'd only draw his gun if he absolutely needed to. Wolfwood didn't wait as long to put the Cross Punisher to good use.

Light, I know you're thinking of taking out Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black again. Don't. I know you're a bad guy, and I know they're annoying as hell, but that's crossing into Z-grade Spider-Man villain territory. Do you really want to be lumped into the same category as Trapster?

Kenshin's reverse-blade sword is one of the great "technical pacifist" weapons, but damn is Kenshin brutal with what he has to do sometimes. In the first episode, he breaks all of a bad guy's fingers! The thing's like a sword-shaped aluminum bat!

I've recently been on a DBZ kick, and while I'm currently up to Vegeta's brotrayal of Nappa, I'm really looking forward to Future Trunks showing up. Just the fact that he carries a sword for most of his time in the story sets him apart from the rest of the crew, and has a more original Dragonball flavor.

Solid Snake and Big Boss don't actually have a signature weapon--CQC + combat knife doesn't really count in this regard. But Ocelot does! For almost every game he's in, Ocelot and his slick revolver-centric gunplay make him the most memorable and likeable villain in the series... which is kinda sad, because he was great in Metal Gear Solid 3, Portable Ops and Peace Walker as a sorta-good guy.

As far as shounen heroes go, Bleach lead Ichigo isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, and his powers reflect that: his sword Zangetsu is a giant slab of metal that he uses to hit things. Its special ability is to hit things far away, and Ichigo's Bankai allows him to hit things faster. His final form allows him to hit all the things.

I can totally forgive Harrison Ford for not giving us that kickass whip vs. sword duel in Raiders of the Lost Ark--the poor man was suffering from dysentery while filming. However, we did get an amazing gun vs. sword duel that lasted about ten seconds.

Berserk is not a happy, fun series, and Guts' Dragonslayer is not a simple, cheery weapon--he describes it as "not very sharp, but just a giant hunk of metal that will rip anything in half if it's hit hard enough." Makes you almost feel bad for Griffith when Guts catches up to him, doesn't it?

And we're back, with part two of "Men with Giant Swords who Fight Effeminate Silver-Haired Pretty-Boy Villains," featuring Cloud and Sephiroth. The Buster Sword itself is a very iconic weapon (and so far the only weapon of its kind in a Final Fantasy game), and makes a great counterpart to Sephiroth's elegant yet deadly Masamune.

Whether he's mowing down small armies of demons with Ebony and Ivory, or just plain showing off with his sword Rebellion, Dante's arsenal is not only cool on principal, but incredibly fun to play with in-game.

Seeing the lightsaber, one of the most iconic and unforgettable weapons in fiction, fills me with nostalgia and also hope for the future. The fact that Star Wars is still loved by fans all around the globe 35 years later is awesome, even with all the crap George Lucas has pulled in the last decade or so.

Link may carry an entire armory on him, what with his boomerang, bow, hookshot and bombs, but nothing is as trusty or as memorable as the Master Sword/Hylian Shield combination.

This one got shrunk in formatting, so check out the full-size version! While it's not my favorite Final Fantasy, FF7 did have one of the more imaginative weapon sets, and one of the most beloved casts.

And that's all for this week! I couldn't fit everybody's requests due to space concerns and had to leave quite a few out--off the top of my head, I can think of Son Goku's Nyoibo/Power Pole, the Sonic Screwdriver, the Batarang, Spidey's web-shooters, Captain America's shield, Mjolnir, and many, many more. What are your favorite signature weapons from your favorite titles? Sound off in the comments!

As always, your art is very welcome here, no matter your skill level or experience. Don't mind the people bitching in the comments, just draw and have fun! Send me your work and I'll make sure to include it in a future installment of Fanart Friday, with a little READER SUBMISSION! bit next to your name! Next week in preparation for New Super Mario Bros. 2, we'll be doing a 100% MARIO-themed Fanart Friday!

Thanks for checking out Fanart Friday, and we hope you have a great weekend!
