The 1st Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair, also called "Kyomafu" for short, was held at Museum of Kyoto-shi Kangyo (Miyakomesse) in Kyoto-city on September 21st (business day for exhibitors/employees), and 22nd-23rd (public day open for public). It was the biggest general trade fair for manga and anime contents in Western Japan. According to their official Twitter account, the estimated number of total visitors was over 20,000.
At first I thought they were trying to be the counterpart of Tokyo International Anime Fair/TAF. However, Kyomafu focused on more otaku-ish stuff than TAF. Unlike TAF, there were no exhibits for well-known titles such as One Piece, Naruto, PreCure, Pokemon, and Dragon Ball Z (even though a new movie is coming next year). The most popular and crowded place at the event was no doubt SHAFT's booth for the up-coming anime film Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie, probably the
most beloved anime series by Japanese otaku fans today. The first film of the Madoka trilogy,
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part I: The Beginning Story, hits Japanese theaters on October 6th.

Cosplay was not prohibited, but I saw very few amateur cosplayers. Probably because the building
had no changing rooms for cosplayers.
