FEATURE: Fanart Friday - Spring Recap Episode Edition

Celebrate a year and a half of Fanart Friday--and check out any installments you've missed!

Fanart Friday returns, vowing to never again do another fifty-picture recap again--First Anniversary Edition really killed me. Last week, we celebrated the release of Darkstalkers Resurrection with a look back at the colorful cast of Capcom's fondly-remembered horror-themed fighter, but this week I'm taking a much more sensible approach to Fanart Friday Recap Episodes... by doing them six months at a time.

The other joy of recap episodes is that I can just post whatever song or YouTube video I want. But don't worry, I'm not going to turn Fanart Friday into KareKano/His & Her Circumstances and have one every other week or something! Now, let's get started!

Fresh off the last recap episode, we went for a general "shounen" theme with Super Shounen Edition, featuring popular favorites like One Piece and Naruto alongside lesser-known gems, like Kongou Banchou!

Of course, we followed up with an all-shoujo edition, showing some love to titles like Natsume Yujin-cho and Kimi ni Todoke with the aptly-named Sparkly Shoujo Edition!

Okay, honestly, I know some of you don't like the single-series installments of Fanart Friday. But I like them, and believe it or not, they tend to be really popular, so, uh... sorry, they're kinda staying. We looked back at Fullmetal Alchemist with Equivalent Exchange Edition, where I was nice and didn't just make it Let's All Mourn for Maes Hughes Edition.

Halloween is the best holiday ever, as I mention in Halloween Horrors Edition, but usually I celebrate with horror movies instead of Pokémon--but hey, to each their own!

Seriously, this was my wallpaper for a while after I finished Swords and Sorcery Edition, where we checked out awesome fanart from anime favorites like Slayers and Record of Lodoss War along with literary favorites like Conan and The Lord of the Rings!

For sci-fi follow-up To Infinity and Beyond Edition, one astute reader pointed out that I completely forgot Buzz Lightyear!

by theCHAMBA

The following week, I dragged you all along to celebrate my birthday with Happy Derpday Edition, revealing my barely-contained love for manly anime and my favorite childhood movies, including The Land Before Time!

Fresh from seeing Wreck-it Ralph, I was holding out for a hero with A Hero's Thanks Edition. I always love seeing heroes who are willing to kick back and share a snack with people they'd normally fight. Everybody needs a break sometimes!

In Second Fiddle Edition, we fondly remembered some sidekicks... and just felt bad for others.

I decided to look back at the series that got me into anime in the first place--Dragonball--with Rock the Dragon Edition. This installment's power level is impressive as hell.

With the winter chill in full force, we covered the Great Snowball War that raged all throughout Winter Wonderland Edition, all to a soundtrack of Trans-Siberian Orchestra!

X-Mas Xtravaganza XTREME Edition X2 pulled out all the stops and delivered the most badical Crunchyroll Christmas ever! (Not really.)

by Robaato

I went to go visit family around New Years, so Joseph Luster took over with Perilous Platforming Edition, revisiting classics from the second-best video game genre around!

by 中野

Upon my return, I brought back another theme with Home Library Edition vol. 2, with a look through Crunchyroll's anime library! Why yes, I'm in the middle of another Gintama marathon right now...

by saturn-freak

While we're already in an anime staple--the recap episode, obviously--earlier in the year we celebrated another anime staple with Hot Springs Episode Edition! Why yes, it was one of our most popular Fanart Fridays ever, thank you for asking!

Even with the occasional misstep (and outright stupid move every now and then), I'm not ashamed to say Capcom is my favorite video game company. Mega Man, Ryu, Mike Haggar and more got to strut their stuff in CAPCPOM REVELAITONS Edition!

by 幼魂@亡

I usually try to keep a positive tone here on Fanart Friday, not spending a lot of time making fun of things or being a snarky, sarcastic prick. But in My Neighbor Miyazaki Edition, I just couldn't help picking on Tales of Earthsea, and Pixiv's artists just made it so easy...

10-Yard Fight Edition was set for the Friday before Super Bowl Sunday, where the San Francisco 49ers (my team) got outclassed by the Baltimore Ravens. Still a good game, though!

The power of friendship should never be underestimated, if We Ride Together, We Die Together Edition is any indication!

by Rae

Okay, so I'll admit that Totally Spies Edition got a little weird when I started taking the entire installment over with Metal Gear pictures, but I can't help it! Who doesn't love Metal Gear?!

by ClarkyBoingo

A coworker of mine believes that Classic Cartoon Cacophony Edition was popular because of the "half-naked Smurfette" headline image. Well, I think she's dead wrong--nostalgia does amazing things, like make you think the G.I. Joe cartoon was a tense military thriller, when the recent live-action movies are just as goofy and stupid as the actual cartoons!

by ultimatesol

Video game mascots took the well-deserved spotlight in Face of the Game Edition, featuring Mario, Link, Nathan Drake, Master Chief and many more!

Finally, that brings us all the way back up to last week, with Darkstalkers' Damnation Edition! In a rare occurrence for Fanart Friday, I didn't actually miss any characters at all, and got the entire cast in this installment!

And we're all caught up! Fanart Friday is all set for the second half of its second year, and it's all thanks to you readers! Thank you for your submissions, your comments (even the negative ones!), and just coming by and checking us out!

Like I say every single week, your work is always welcome here on Fanart Friday, regardless of your skill level or experience. Just PM me a link to your work, and I'll make sure to include it in a future installment! For those of you wanting to get a head start, next week we'll be celebrating YOUNGER SIBLINGS in our favorite anime, manga, games and more!

I can't say it enough--thanks again for checking out Fanart Friday, and for keeping this column going! Here's an important question before we go: what themes would YOU like to see in future installments of Fanart Friday? Sound off in the comments--no suggestion is a bad suggestion, and will all be taken into consideration!
