Japanese anime and manga convention Anime Festival Asia Indonesia 2013, or AFAID, was held at the Jakarta Convention Center from Friday, September 6th to Sunday, September 8th.
Designed as a way to bring Japanese pop culture to southeast Asia, the first AFA was held in Singapore in 2008. The convention was expanded in 2012 to include events in Kuala Lumpur, Mayaysia, and Jakarta, Indonesia. This year marked the second annual AFAID.
51,000 people attended this year’s AFAID, an increase of 10,000 over last year’s event. The convention floor was crowded with attendees, and lines for the Creators Hub fan-made merchandise area and AFA Cafe maid and butler cafe stretched into the distance. Numerous cosplayers attended the event, posing for photos with attendees throughout the day.
The main hall hosted live performances on the 6th and 7th, with Eir Aoi, Aya Hirano, and May’n performing on the 6th, and fripSide, BABYMETAL, Dempagumi.inc, and Kalafina appearing on the 7th. Both performances drew huge and enthusiastic crowds.
Kicking off the concert series was Eir Aoi, performing live in Southeast Asia for the first time and receiving a warm welcome from the 2,500 concert attendees.
Eir Aoi performed a total of 8 songs, mixing in Indonesian words and phrases while talking to the audience.
The space ship-like main hall was lit up by glowsticks.
Popular trio Kalafina performed 7 songs, including many of their famous anime theme songs. The day’s performance was attended by 3,850 fans, many of whom were singing along in Japanese.
People continued to stream into the venue well into the afternoon.
There was a huge turnout for the signing event the afternoon before the live performances. It was also revealed that Eir Aoi will be performing at AFA 13 in Singapore this November.
