FEATURE: Fanart Friday - X-Mas Xtravaganza XTREME Edition xXx

Put on your tackiest sweater and celebrate Fanart Friday's third Christmas!

Fanart Friday returns, thoroughly engorged on Royal Dansk butter cookies. Last week, we kept score with our favorite sports titles, but this week we're putting on our Santa hats, digging up our most hideous knitted sweaters, and watching the season's most beloved classics--it's time for our annual Christmas installment!

Fan artists tend to go kinda nuts during the holidays, getting a chance to draw their favorite characters getting in on the Christmas spirit. I've also learned how freakin' hard it can be to get some requests, especially for slightly older titles like School Rumble, B Gata H Kei, and I''s--sorry, folks! Keep putting your requests in the comments, though, and I'll do my best to find fanart for 'em! Now, let's get started!

DISCLAIMER:  None of the art presented is the property of myself or Crunchyroll.  All characters and series are tm and © their respective creators and corporate owners.  All art is the creative property of their respective artists.  Any artists who wish to have their work removed from this article may contact me, and appropriate action will be immediately taken.

Some kind of "Santa Snake" has shown up in every Christmas installment so far, but I think I'm eventually going to run out of art. Big Boss' bag o' goodies includes the wondrous Calorie Mate (I've still never had one) and a whole lot of heavy weaponry. Um... thanks, Boss?

ffhayate

by ほっぺげ

Hayate's a butler (a combat butler at that!) so I can imagine how awful Christmas can get for him, especially with Nagi's constant psychotic requests.

I kind of appreciate that regular Fanart Friday reader MrAprilFoolsDay comes up with stuff that's kind of off the beaten path for his requests, like Danny Phantom here!

I have a Blu-ray set of Soul Eater sitting on my shelf, and I've only watched part of the first disc. Don't get me wrong, I've watched the entire series once before, but I always follow the same cycle: insert disc into PS3. Marvel at animation quality. Leave on as background noise while I work. Get distracted by something else and forget I own the series. Repeat a few months later, with the exact same episodes. Any of you do this with shows you own?

ffhaikyu

by ヤマザキ

I didn't include Haikyuu! in last week's Wide World of Sports Edition since I didn't get any requests for it, but here's the series' leads (I'd assume?) showing off their Christmas cheer!

The fact that Natsume Yujin-cho stays one of our most popular series gives me a lot of hope. I love my boiling blood and fierce fighting action, but every now and then I just want a story about people and day-to-day life told straight, and shoujo and josei titles are really, really good for that.

There are days when I wish IDOLM@STER would just disappear off the face of the Earth. Not because I dislike it, mind you, but because it's stolen Berserk author Miura Kentarou from us!

ffchopper

by DAGASI

Aw, Chopper, you so adorable! He doesn't mind that One Piece is entering a filler arc--One Piece filler is pretty awesome nine times out of ten, to the point that it's sometimes hard to tell from actual canon!

I know, I still haven't had a chance to check out Frozen yet, but I will! Last year, we had Brave and Wreck-it Ralph after the pretty bare 2011 (seriously, Cars 2? although I did really like Winnie the Pooh), and Frozen seems to continue Disney's great track record with gorgeously-animated fairy tales.

Every little bit of news I see for the new Sailor Moon anime is killing me. WHEN IS IT COMING OUT? IS CRUNCHYROLL GOING TO STREAM IT? WILL THEY KEEP IT FAITHFUL TO THE MANGA OR WILL IT BE A MONSTER-OF-THE-WEEK THING LIKE THE ORIGINAL? The suspense is unbearable!

Precure has kind of taken over as the magical girl series in Japan (kinda like One Piece has taken over Dragonball's spot), so of course there's tons of fanart for it! This was a pretty cool Smile Precure group shot getting all the girls together!

See, this artist knows where the love should be on Christmas--with classic animated specials and movies! The Grinch is a rotten one, but I think Jack's infectious positivity would eventually whittle down his crappy attitude.

I know we had a Soul Eater picture already, but a reader passed this Crona pic to me, and it was too damn cute to pass up.

Here's a fun challenge: sing Christmas carols in either one of these Decepticon's voices. Personal requests? Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" sung by Soundwave, and "O Christmas Tree" sung by Starscream.

I don't care if it says 2012 in big letters on there, this is still a beautiful picture. I may be in a big minority talking about this, but I'd love to be able to watch Detective Conan here on CR. I'd marathon the shit out of that show.

No matter how bleak Puella Magi Madoka Magica got, I always held on to the idea that the girls could all have a normal life together, have normal (Japanese) Christmases (with KFC... and cake, I guess), and not have to worry about, y'know... the apocalypse.

Santa Keith wants you to be good, otherwise he'll personally show up at your house and intimidate you with his stare alone. Do you actually think they go through all the motions with Santa and trees and whatnot in Attack on Titan? I think it's that young adult Christmas where you all know what everybody's buying each other, with the occasional surprise thrown in--the Attack on Titan world is a place where surprises usually suck, and involve hungry man-eating giants.

It really says something when there's still regular (and great!) Slam Dunk fanart after all this time. While his awesome regent hairstyle goes well with the antlers (which I really need to put on one of my dogs and then chase them around the house), I always thought Sakuragi was coolest with the buzz cut.

A small number of you might be wondering why I didn't do a review of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Well, it's easily one of my favorite games of the year (if not my absolute favorite game of the year) since it evoked the same feeling in me as The Minish Cap and the paired Oracle titles--you really cannot go wrong with a portable Legend of Zelda game. Speaking of which, here's some great Christmasy Minish Cap art!

ffhostclub

by 常陸院

Remember that thing I was saying earlier about how I own Soul Eater on Blu-ray? Take that exact same scenario, then multiply it over a couple years with Ouran High School Host Club. I just can't get enough of the twins' hilarity.

ffrumiko

by やなぎ

A reader asked for Inuyasha art for this week, but apparently they don't celebrate Christmas in Feudal Japan (or Kagome didn't bring any KFC through the well), so instead I found this great piece that gathers together a bunch of Rumiko Takahashi favorites!

ffamnesia

by 雪茶々

Amnesia is a show that doesn't get a lot of love here on Fanart Friday, as folks don't request it much and I kind of, uh... never really watched it. But still, it was impossible to pass this one up!

Christmas Miku has arrived... with a very small bag in tow. What, Miku, are you just giving everybody gift cards for Christmas? Because I'm totally okay with that.

ffjojo

See, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable's lead, Josuke, has a nice, giant bag full of goodies. Maybe he's trying to one-up Miku?

I pretty much need to mention Gintama whenever we do the Christmas installments (or anytime, really--the series is amazing), basically because Gintama is one of the few anime that regularly has Christmas episodes. Poor Santa--he just can't catch a break, ever.

ffbtb

by Lalla

Only one episode to go, and I can't wait--I marathonned most of Beyond the Boundary a couple nights ago when my friend Sarah had to write a review for the CR Newsletter. I honestly wasn't all that interested in the series when I'd first heard of it, but it very quickly won me over--this picture perfectly shows off the two leads' goofy personalities.

ffrobosanta

by CyberDrone

Let's end with one of the deadliest incarnations of Old St. Nick, the ruthless ROBO-SANTA from Futurama! I'd recommend actually checking out CyberDrone's gallery for a full-resolution papercraft, along with all the other awesome stuff he's put together!

That's it for this week, but in case you're still in the mood for more Christmas fanart, here's 2011's X-Mas Xtravaganza XTREME Edition X, and 2012's X-Mas Xtravaganza XTREME Edition X2!

Your art is always welcome on Fanart Friday, regardless of your experience or skill level--just PM me a link to your work, and I'll make sure to include it in a future installment! Here are the next two themes for Fanart Friday:

-Next week, on DECEMBER 27th, we wrap up the year with a look at those people you just spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with--it's all about FAMILY on the next Fanart Friday! But family doesn't always mean blood--which characters best signify family to you? THIS IS THE ONLY THEME I'M TAKING REQUESTS FOR THIS WEEK!

-Then, on JANUARY 3rd, we continue a Fanart Friday tradition, starting off the new year with a trip through Crunchyroll's anime library as HOME LIBRARY EDITION returns!

I'll have something set up for January 10th by next week, after I plan out the coming months. Thanks again for coming by to check out Fanart Friday. Have a great weekend, have a very Merry Christmas and happy holidays, and I hope you drop by again next week!
