The semi-autobiographical manga of gekiga—"dramatic pictures," a more serious take on manga—pioneer Yoshihiro Tatsumi, A Drifting Life, hit US bookshelves with a resounding 800+ page thud in 2009. Drawn & Quarterly's publication of the monster tome isn't the end of this inspiring tale, however, as Singaporean filmmaker Eric Khoo has been working on an animated adaptation, a trailer for which is now streaming at Toon Boom Animation.
The trailer, streaming here, showcases the way in which Khoo has opted to bring Tatsumi's work to animated life, from the actual autobiographical aspects to the pages of fledgling works like 1956's Black Blizzard.
In addition to this preview, you can also check out a short video on the making of Tatsumi, which Hewlett Packard originally posted last month.
