Shout! Factory, who publishes DVDs of both movie send-up classic Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Kadokawa's turtle kaiju Gamera, has finally received permission to release the meeting of the two.
MST3K Vol. XX: "MST3K vs. Gamera" will feature 302: Gamera (1991-06-08), 304: Gamera Vs. Barugon (1991-06-22), 308: Gamera Vs. Gaos (1991-07-20), 312: Gamera Vs. Guiron (1991-09-07) and 316: Gamera Vs. Zigra (1991-10-19), collected on August 2, 2011 for $64.99. The Special Features for MST3K Vol. XX: "MST3K vs. Gamera" will include these on-screen featurettes: "So Happy Together: A Look Back at MST3K and Gamera", "Gamera vs. The Chiodo Brothers", "Gamera Obscura: A Brief History by August Ragone, the original Japanese trailers and five limited-edition mini-posters by artist Steve Vance.
The welcomed release is surprising in that Kadokawa has had a reluctance to seeing fun poked at their giant, flying turtle. There's an often quoted comment from Shout! Factory's Brian Ward saying "the Japanese just aren't into their man-in-suit flicks being parodied or mocked in any way."
