After the success Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima's Lone Wolf and Cub had in the Dark Horse Digital Store, it's no surprise that they've added another period piece from the dynamic duo. The latest classic addition to the store is none other than Samurai Executioner vol. 1, comin' straight outta '72.
Samurai Executioner's narrative revolves around Yamada Asaemon (AKA Kubikiri-Asa), a decapitator and bearer of the sword Onibocho whose duties included testing swords for the shogun. The manga follows his life before his fatal duel with the Lone Wolf, Ogami Itto, and it features a level of writing and meticulous artwork comparable to Lone Wolf and Cub.
It's also a less overwhelming investment at a total of 10 volumes, the first of which goes for $4.99 in the Digital Store. I believe the physical copies were $9.99 when they were first published, so that's not too bad. Here's the manga's page, where you can both order it and give the insides a quick sneak peek.
As a reminder, Dark Horse Digital comics are both readable in web browsers and via Apple's iOS devices. Here's a link to the free app if you happen to have access to the latter.
