If you've enjoyed the simple pop-up 8-bit diorama action of 3DS Classics like Excitebike and Urban Champion, then you'll really dig what's going on with another old Nintendo title. Renegade, the first in the series known as Kunio-kun in Japan—which includes titles like River City Ransom, Super Dodge Ball and Crash 'n the Boys Street Challenge—is getting a full-on remake.
The Kunio-kun series started 25 years ago with the arcade beat 'em up Nekketsu Koha Kunio-kun, which was ported to Famicom and brought to the North American Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) as Renegade. The original look shared very little resemblance to the lovable River City Ransom sprites we know today, but now Renegade is being made over in that style for 3DS. See for yourself below.
In addition to the graphical update, there are also added RPG elements, multiplayer missions, a Street-Pass compatible "Battle Royale" and a gallery of old promotional art. The original arcade game is even included for good measure. The remake is being overseen by Kunio-kun creator Yoshihisa Kishimoto, and is due out this winter in Japan (¥4,410).
