NYAF: FUNimation Acquires "Fafner" Anime and "Oblivion Island" CGI Movie

FUNimation announced at their New York Anime Festival Panel today that that they have licensed home entertainment, digital, and merchandise rights to the Fafner anime series.


Also known as Fafner in the Azure, this 2004 26 episode series was produced by XEBEC (Love Hina, Broken Blade). As part of the deal, FUNimation has also licensed the 2010 theatrical film Fafner in the Azure: Heaven and Earth.


The story concerns a group of young mecha pilots who battle giant aliens called Fetsum who have destroyed much of the world save for a remote island in Japan. 



FUNimation also announced their aquisition of Production I.G.'s full length animated film Oblivion Island. Also known as Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror, this 2009 fantasy film was directed by Shinsuke Sato, who also helmed the recent GANTZ live action films.
