The reason *I* gave up on reading most of the stuff in Shonen Jump is because they stopped PRINTING it *IN* Shonen Jump! I am NOT paying 15 bucks for a manga volume, I don't have that kind of money. (Canadian, the prices on books are STUPID high for some godforsaken reason)

They skipped like thirteen volumes of Naruto, Bleach, Yugioh, AND One Piece, to catch up to japanese Jump, leaving me behind and, for the most part, not knowing what's going on, OR giving me any reason to care. I subscribe to Jump to read the manga! THAT IS WHAT IT IS FOR, ISN'T IT?! Rrrghh....makes me so mad....and now! AND NOW! They're stopping the physical copies?! If I wanted to read it online I'D JUST READ IT ALL ONLINE!
Someone had to say it~ LOL

I feel your pain... I feel more or less the same way. I think pretty much everything they've been doing in regards to this stuff is just stupid.

If I didn't follow along with weekly updates, I'd be completely lost...

No way in hell I'm PAYING for DIGITAL manga I can't even HOLD. lol I subscribe to SJ to hold manga in my hands and read it, at a discount price. I can't bring my laptop everywhere, and I won't even have internet everywhere. And I can't afford an iPad, and there is NO WAY IN HELL I'm gonna squint at a tiny screen on an iPhone and iPod Touch to read manga. XD
thats so true i agree with you
if you want shonen jump manga for cheap, go to right stuf. i'm canadian too and that's the absolute cheapest place to get it, and it's free shipping on orders over 150. shonen jump volumes are only $6-$7.50. which is way better than our ridiculous 12.99's.
You can just buy the manga volumes off of Amazon for cheaper.
Remember kids, Fist of the North Star is only 27 volumes long! And it's only the first 16 or so that are absolutely essential reading.
I second this.
Third this
The only one of those mangas I've read from start to finish from Viz is Hunter x Hunter. Keep in mind Viz didn't necessarily give up on Hunter x Hunter. They stopped where original production had ended at in Japan. It is my understanding that they haven't been able to get the rights past the original production. I also don't think the Hunter x Hunter quality has been poor.

I did give up on Prince of Tennis solely because I didn't want to reorder the first 22 volumes after one of our air conditioners ruined my set from Viz. I didn't like some of the edited items by Viz, but I wouldn't call it subpar quality.

I only bought the One Piece volumes that didn't appear in the magazine. My only complaint with those was them changing Zoro to Zolo since 4Kids had used the translation of Zolo afterViz started translating it. I plan on getting the volumes once more when the magazine run ends.

I never felt the need to get all the Naruto volumes. The anime basically keeps everything in the manga in it as well as adds additional info, and I can freely watch the anime on Crunchyroll, VizAnime, Netflix, and other places, so why would I need the manga volumes to occupy more room than I have available?
As much as I love a good story, and they all need a conclusion... I'd be really sad if Naruto stopped. :(
I gave up on naruto half way through for similar reasons as before . the huge manga skip SJ did threw me off and left me in the dark and in general made me not want to read it anymore. SJ was my source for naruto and them skipping X amount of volumes to catch up to japan made me quit the series . Usually i would just watch the anime but at the time i had no knowledge of crunchyroll and naruto was no airing on american television to catch me up.

The rest on this list i have not read except for Hitman Reborn BUT the reason i've stop that is because VIZ has stop printing the FLIPPING books and has not given an official press statement as to whats up with the series
You can read the manga on line.... of the top of my head I know 4 places to catch up on the manga's you have missed.....
But none of them are legal I bet.
The only ones on this list I've read are Naruto and Bleach and I'm still reading them because I started reading them online and I continue to read it online each week. I will not give up until the bloody conclusion because to give up partway through would just make me feel like I wasted time and I don't waste THAT much time on a book.
I gave up on the Naruto anime. I'll finish the manga, but only because it's one of the first mangas i read. I'm in the same boat about Bleach, but it's undecided yet. But the chances are high i'll drop that one as well.
I've only ever read Bleach, Naruto and Gintama in this list. Gave up with Naruto because I decided to just watch the anime, which was obviously a wrong decision to make. Watching all those filler episodes just made me drop the whole thing completely. Bleach on the other hand, I religiously followed up to about 50 chapters ago. Gintama, however hilarious it is, I find it funnier in the anime. :) Out of these 3, I'd still read Bleach and Gintama, but with Naruto, I'll probably wait until it's finished.
The problem with most of those is not the length but the fact that they are still ongoing. I don't feel like taking time every week to read 18 pages of what could possibly be nothing. I'll just wait until I'm a couple months behind and sit down and ready a couple chapters. I'm more interested in out of the people who say they 'give up' go back to the manga down the line.
I gave up on Naruto a long time after I learned how much more awesome Bleach is!
I think "give up partyway through" is not the ideal way to phrase it. One thing I've noticed recurring among people that are well motivated to insult the big-3 anime equally is that it's not so much that they dislike the content itself but that they simply cannot stand a long-running series. That's because your average story has a clear beginning, climax, and conclusion. These people become uneasy with the infiniteness, the lack of clearly tying up open ends, the fact that these series never have a complete closing to any arc since the series will go on.

Of course, cost can also become an issue. If I was limited to buying the manga or DVDs of these, I doubt I'd be able to keep up with the cost, without dropping non-ongoing series at least.
Length is definitely an issue that goes hand in hand with cost. For instance, I LOVE One Piece, but I just can't afford to keep up with it! The "catch up" of the US releases was great, but it essentially added scores of volumes to my "to buy" list.
Also... time. I don't have TIME to read it all!
well...I've been like a fourth grader when I watched naruto and look at me now, I've got one year left before graduating from college. Who could blame those people from giving up. Same goes to bleach and one piece. >.<
One Piece is actually getting good. Naruto is pretty obvious what's going to happen. Bleach is just trying prevent it from ending by adding random events... unless this is all a setup for something in the future.
the only anime i ever gave up was detective conan and thats cause of the pacing. which seems nonexistent cause 100 eps = about 5-10 eps mof plot. besides that i was into the anime and i got sick of waiting 4 more subs while i was really into it to cintinue in order.
I don't understand why people give up due to "how expensive it is." You can always find it online for free and print it if you want to read it on paper. Not to hard really. Never started any manga myself, I find watching a 20min anime a few times a week better than sitting down for hours reading comics.

When I read may as well read things that are of interest to me.
Mostly cause that's illegal :) but that doesn't stop a lot of people from reading. It does for some people.
TO BE HONEST! They need to have all manga and anime to be all digital <3 so things like manga/anime getting lost or destroyed because of this and that won't happen :) As long you treat your hard drive/computer in good condition which most people do :D than some books that can get ruined easily or dvd that gets easily misplaced.
I agree. Releasing things in digital form particularly increases ease of access, and doing that increases the likelihood of people spending on an item the moment they can. I am certainly one who prefers digital. Steam has demonstrated that I'm far more willing to buy games there than any physical games. It also eliminates both subtle costs of shipping and gas, plus I can stay working at my own pace, and have the goods I payed for instantly without losing any time.

Really it sounds profitable to me, but I get the impression that a lot of japanese companies aren't too enthusiastic about going digital...
I don't blame people for giving up on HunterxHunter considering how many times the manga has been interrupted due to the creator's getting sick.
Gon is so badass in his crazy older self form :D
Don't forget his Dragon Quest addiction slowing things down. Damn me for loving Hunter X Hunter though, I can't give up.
I'd never give up on Naruto! But I can't say I'd buy shounen jumps I'd rather wait till the whole manga is out.
?? I though the Katekyo Hitman Reborn and Prince of Tennis is done. Well I watch anime. I dont read much manga. ?? is it going to be more or not? Im kinda confused.
katekyo hitman reborn manga is what i would call in it second story season/next ark as for pince of tennis its manga is now called the new prince of tennis (i think) and they're in a new location with alot of strong players.
The Reborn manga is still going on, I suggest you read it if you like Reborn.

As for the actual topic:
Only times I give up on manga is because I can't find a place to read it, so I can't continue.
Ninja'd. 10tacos.
I did, but that's only because SJ has a bad habit of taking titles, like Shaman King and One Piece, for 6 mths, then putting them back in, only it's not at the chapter they left off. It's 100 chapters later! That's eff'ing ridiculous. So I just quit buying it altogether.
I stopped reading bleach, naruto, and katekyo hitman reborn! simply because i found other series i liked better. That being said I don't think I'd ever stop reading JoJo's Bizarre adventure unless it ended or the author was unable to write it anymore.
...There are people who actually try to read Kochikame start to finish? Wow.
I gave up on Naruto, Bleach, and Reborn like two years ago...and I REALLY don't want to pick them back up again. I like stories that end.
havent read Kochikame and Captain Tsubasa. but i read the test. kinda stopped on the Gintama manga cuz im watching the anime instead
I gave up on bleach after the defeat of Azien. I love the slice of life school stuff but Kubo has such bad pacing. He should just stick to art preferably ecchi.
Cannot believe One Piece is third. smh...
Manga are not really cheap to keep up with. While you can save by getting manga online, the price still adds up after a while of keeping up and to keep up, you usually have to keep buying volumes. At ten american dollars a volume, times that by 600, 700, whatever the number of volumes a manga already has out. It's not really that people get tired of reading. It's that they can not afford to keep up with it. When I go for a manga series, I want something relatively short, so I can afford to get it all, read, enjoy, and go back to it later. That, and I usually prefer anime to manga (even though my absolute favorite manga, MeruPuri, will probably never see animation).
When you say 600 or 700 you are talking about chapters. In each manga volume there is at least 8 or 9 chapters.

Look in the right places or buy in bulk and you can save a lot of money.
I gave up on the Naruto anime because of fillers, but I still read the manga. I gave up on One Piece after just a few chapters and episodes, because it simply didn't interest me to begin with. I faithfully read TeniPri to the end, but it's harder to come by Shin... I do plan to read it when I get a proper chance, though. So I haven't dropped that. As for Reborn, I didn't give it up, but it's on hold, due to time constraints in life. LOL As for the others I did not mention, I've never even paid attention to them, nor do I plan to. I simply don't have time. Reading three weekly series (Bakuman, Bleach, Naruto) is enough for me. Plus I have four weekly anime I watch as well. (Chihayafuru, The Idolm@ster, Bleach, Kimi to Boku.) So I have my hands full already. LOL
People, it's called a library. lol
And some libraries don't have good/up to date/any manga. Duh.
me i would NEVER give up on naruto lyk are you serious
im smart and i dont have not one on this page but i do have others and ya it dos suck but
its in my blood GOT a HAVE THEM ALL lol its OTAKU ^_^
HAHA, I recognize Number 2!
I haven't read any of them just because I don't have the time to catch up. I'm also wary of dragging plots and commercially-driven plot twists that tend to occur in series of that length.
Some pretty interesting choices here...
No doubt the big shounen 3 are there, plus Kochikame(longest running manga in history...).
The longer a manga is, the more chance that people drop it, it seems.

I personally never drop a manga, because then I'll get behind, and I won't know if something good actually happened on the spot.

People who drop manga don't like to take 3 minutes or so out of their time a week I guess. It's a lot faster than a dragging on anime which almost always takes 20 min.(depending on decision to skip OP/ED, up to ~23 min.).
I didn't just give up on some of these, I gave up on the North American Shonen Jump altogether after about two-three years of collecting it. Once I'd started getting behind on my reading I decided it wasn't worth collecting, plus those volumes were quite thick and took up a lot of space when piled together! ;x
no i love naruto and bleach
On Anime News Network it is pointed out that ironically, these same series get people to READ Shounen Jump. As to the original question, I have never actually read any of these series. I have seen some of the Naruto Anime and dropped it. I watch One Piece as Funimation releases them on DVD. I bought the first 3 seasons and the first movie of Bleach on DVD and will stream the rest of it--someday. I plan to watch Gintama and Reborn! I saw the first Hunter X Hunter Anime TV series and liked it so I will probably watch the new version sometime.
I've given up on all of the listed manga.
I gave up because they became boring. :)
Only time I've given up on a manga is simply because Its no longer interesting and it has turned stale. Gintama is in my opinion, the only one that manages to be fresh. Best part is, that the anime makes the hilarity and epicness even better!
NOT GINTAMA! It doesn't even have a "goal" or story. =(

But as much as I hate to admit, it's easy for certain manga and anime to become victims of their own successes. Going over 30 volumes may work well for some readers, and not for others.
I wish I had a way of getting Bleach manga down under, but it's 2 hours to the nearest city, and even then I have to go rooting around to find it... for a ridiculous price. I still have some from Japan though, so I guess the anime, along with the few manga I have will have to do for now.
I'll keep reading One Piece Naruto and Bleach because they are awesome
i dont read manga, i dont have the time or money to shell out $15 an issue. i prefer the anime over the manga any day, please no flaming me over this, but im usually too tired after work/school to read manga when i can watch anime, which to bo honest, is easier to follow than the manga is when your tired, and i can understand basic japanese so its just that much more easy than reading manga, that, and i live in america. if you want manga, read it online or spend a ton ordering it online
Manga volumes are only about $9 shipped worldwide on book depository.

They are around $16 shipped anywhere outside of the US for your first book and then they are $9 each after that on Rightstuf.
dont stop making them shonen jump
you people rock
still reading Naruto and One Piece weekly. I gave up on Bleach thou.
Totally gave up on Naruto and Bleach. Haven't read any of the others, but I keep up with the Gintama anime.
Hmm... I've finished reading Naruto, bleach, one piece, katekyo hitman reborn, and hunter x hunter.. but I haven't even start reading the rest
