I can't decide if I like Guts' expression or not, but I think they did a great job with Griffith. The background design is lovely too.

Well this is really the only arc he smiles a lot during once he feels companionship for the first real time in his life with his fellow Band of the Hawk. I expect nothing but resolution and a hatred filled grimace or snarl for everything after the Eclipse. Poor Gatsu.

I have no problem with him smiling. I'm just not sure that the way they drew the smile looks right. I like your comment about "resolution and hatred" - it made me smile. (How ironic.)
