This is a little belated since it's not the 16th over in Japan any more, but Shigeru Miyamoto, legendary Nintendo video game designer and creator of Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, and more just turned 59!
Miyamoto draws inspiration from the most unusual places, from The Legend of Zelda being inspired by tramping around the woods and fields as a boy in Kyoto, to his own garden for Pikmin, to landlord Mario Segale for the world's most famous video game character.
If anything, Miyamoto looks like a guy who appreciates his fan's love of his work. He doesn't try to make the best games, nor does he try to make games that are on the bleeding edge of technology. He just tries to make games that are fun, memorable, and above all enduring. It's been over 25 years since Super Mario Bros. was released, and people are still playing it--and still enjoying it. There are very, very few games like it.
Happy birthday, Shigeru Miyamoto, you mad Master Sword-wielding genius. Here's to many more brilliant games and a happy and fulfilling life!
