Anime industry veteran Shingo Araki has passed away at the age 72. After debuting as an animation director on classic boxing series Ashita no Joe, he served as character designer and animation director for the Toei adaptations of Go Nagai's Cutie Honey and Devilman, as well as Mitsuteru Yokoyama's Babel II and Leiji Matsumoto's Galaxy Express 999, and TMS' adaptation of Riyoko Ikeda's Rose of Versailles.
Internationally, he is probably best known for his character designs on shonen fighting standard Saint Seiya, while American children of the '80s probably caught some of his animation efforts on the outsourced Inspector Gadget and Heathcliff & the Catillac Cats.
This fall, Araki visted Europe as a guest of Paris Manga 2011.
