In the last ten years, a lot has happened in the Marvel Universe. Almost too much, if you really think about it: an explosion in the mutant population, the Avengers being disbanded then reformed, decimation of the mutant population making them an endangered species, a superhero Civil War, a Skrull invasion, the world's security being put in the hands of a known villain, and finally everything going back to normal after a city-leveling confrontation. Almost makes me wonder why people say that American comics are the same thing all the time, when really they're just one long, continuous story.
That return to the status quo has been, by and far, some of the best stuff I've read in years, as Marvel's series are actually fun to read again instead of being full of not-too-vague political references and shock-value violence (thanks, Sentry). But, of course, peace can only last so long, as Marvel's next big event pits its two most popular and beloved teams against each other.
The Phoenix Force, an omnipotent cosmic entity that once possessed the late Jean Grey, is on its way back to Earth seeking a new host. But what ignites the war between Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Xavier School staff? And what about characters like Wolverine and Beast, who are involved with both teams? We'll just have to wait until the event starts in April of 2012 to find out--and it'll even be available digitally.
What do you think? Is it going to be over Jean? Editors have told us time and again that she's dead, so who in the Marvel Universe--specifically who on Earth--is the Phoenix Force looking to claim as its own?
