Survey: A Third of Japanese Youth Are Not Interested in Sex & Relationships
Population Crisis looms
Japan-watchers have long known that the Land of the Rising Sun has been having a bit of trouble in the bedroom. But now, the Huffington Post and the BBC have prepared new reports that quote some downright shocking figures: a third of Japanese youth have no interest in sex and relationships.
Wow. That's A LOT of disinterest!
Even worse, the Huffington Post quotes a new survey conducted by the Japan Family Planning Association which found that “36% of males aged 16 to 19 said that they had 'no interest' in or even 'despised' sex. That's almost a 19% increase since the survey was last conducted in 2008.”
“If that's not bad enough, The Wall Street Journal reports that a whopping 59% of female respondents aged 16 to 19 said they were uninterested in or averse to sex, a near 12% increase since 2008.”
Japanese girls: "uninterested in or averse to sex". Um, okay...
Numbers like that spell disaster for the future of Japan and its rapidly-aging population. The big question: Who is going to take care of all the old people if a new generation of young people aren’t around to support and mop up after them?
The answer is: no one! Associated Press claims that the entire population of Japan will have been reduced by one-third by the year 2060, by which point 40 percent of everyone you meet there will be old, elderly, ancient.

Now, let's play the blame game. The Huffington Post and other sources point the finger at weak men, AKA soushoku danshi ("herbivore men"), who supposedly lack the rugged manly attributes of their hot blooded macho forefathers...but often have really nice hairdos and know great cafes. LOVE ISN'T EASY, and many guys are now avoiding it because they don't want to play the game, it's troublesome, etc.

And...there’s no small amount of blame being placed on Japanese youth who spend “too much time engaged with technology, living in virtual worlds or settling for virtual girlfriends rather than real ones." The media in Japan periodically loves to blame otaku for some such other offense, so why not people not getting it on?
Either way, here's a recent BBC video report based on the same findings. Watch it and weep for the future of Japan or just cuddle up to someone close to you and thank your lucky stars.

I would have to agree with you every person has their own choice of wanting to date or not, Becoming a parent in the other hand does require lots of sacrifices and some people think they are not ready to bring a child to to the world without having a proper amount of cash and the love it requires to raise one.
But, that's what life's all about, making those sacrifices. I've been studying Japanese economics for quite a long while now. The only step Japan can take to ease its many issues is by increasing its population. Worst comes to worst, if the population continues to decline, there are going to have fewer tax payers. Not to mention their debt, which is expected to reach 218% at the end of this year (it already is the largest in the world).
as in their debt is going to become unbearable by 2050, they can find their way out of it (unlike Europe). but, Japan will have a hard time finding investors.

yea, what sucks even more is the fact that if their current PM (Yoshihiko Noda) doesn't submit their new tax bill (which is supposed to increase taxes by 10% to compensate for the disaster and the social security for the old people, which deals with their trade deficit for 2011) Japan's going to be downgraded by S&P and Moody's. this might not be good as they will be loosing their investors. unfortunately things aren't so good for Japan right now. which makes me a bit unhappy.

yea it may seem to be advantageous now. but it is going to scare away new investors. regardless of the fact that their debt is denominated in their own currency. and for a major economy like Japan to grow they need new investors. Japan has been in a recession for about 20 years, and if you've noticed their economic growth rate has been less than half of the U.S. so during 2009 when U.S. had a GDP of 1.8% Japan's was .43% (this is what gave China the upper hand and they surpassed them in 2010). well, to make it worse India is going to surpass Japan by 2015. seriously, if there is anything for Japan to blame it would be signing that Plaza Accord with the U.S. this just turned their economy up side down.
the Japanese need to really get their heads together (the citizens). now that all the nuclear plants have been shut off due to protests, Japan needs to depend on Iran and other sources for oil, which may result in another trade deficit this year. oil prices are going to go up especially during Japan's peak consumption season, which is this summer.

Ok I understand your points but they said they were not interested in SEX. There are things called condoms and 1 night stands. I'm not a fan but I know plenty of other men here in the US who are. Not only that but when I was 16 I was insanely horny all the time. I just don't see how they could just turn off their sex drive at that age.

one of the largest issue is the non-otaku, if you grow up being told otaku is creepy and wrong and to stay away of course they start with a base that despise them before they got the chance to even play the dating game. i consider it a form of discrimination to look down on otaku, yea some go to the far creepy level and i understand the reduced chance, but even my GF's roomate was talking crap about anime. the part that is funny is her interest in piercings tattoos (now no where near as looked down on cause majority have them now) and near buzz cut orange hair and super slow, lazy and condescending. but im weird cause i watch anime and a creeper..
until people start accepting that its becoming a very popular trend and more and more people either to be indifferent or at least understand it a little and stop looking down on it, destroying the confidence and always making someone who enjoys anime feel socially awkward, no wonder the youth feel disinterest in sex, wasn't until i turned about 20 did i even try to socially engage myself because the highschool games of judging had ended.

Ah it's just a reporter mentioning what's in the post I guess and a sort of interview with a guy who'd avoid relationships because of all the commitment + effort he has to put into it as well as an interview with a doctor talking about how low child births are even though the fee's for childbirth in a hospital etc are free.

That's what I'm thinking. All those pretty girls over there and too few men willing to get off their a$$ and even try to be romantic towards them. Ya we want them to be cute and pretty, so them wanting us to be physically fit in return isn't out of line. Working out is good for our mental and health state anyway so I'm always bewildered why some people are so resistant to it. Anyway, we men need to start a "Save Japan's Beautiful Girl's" campaign. Bringing romance to the poor lonely beautiful girls and maybe Old Spice for the guys so they can man up and join our ranks :)

not surprising at all a nation that it's developed as japan focuses more on work than having kids/sex/relation ships. This isn't anything new people it's been going on for decades but i am open for debate.
I'm down for a debate lol. What are we gunna be talking about (Japanese economics, politics, tech, anime, culture, etc). I kinda want to test my knowledge on Japan that's all and learn new stuff (stuff I didn't already know).

Also theres the fact that polls only ask a small segment of people compared to the whole of the country... which admittedly would be kinda hard to do. If they took these numbers from an online poll, well, we all know how suspect those can be.

Well, there are tons of articles on the fact that Japan has been experiencing a decline in population growth, and actually a decline in overall population as of the 2011 census.
To be honest, if we didn't have such a high immigration, America would be experiencing a significant population decline. Japan has the lowest immigration rate out of the OECD countries, which is a big part of the problem. Though, they are trying to rectify that, the tsunami really put a dent in those plans.
It's a belief that once a country becomes too 'developed' the population begins to decline.
Which could be good or bad. It's really hard to say at this point, but less people around to screw up the environment could go towards fixing things considerably.
Course, it could also leave too little people to clean up the mess.
There's no certain answer to this dilemma.

Right, the media is always blowing things up for sensationalism. I don't think things are as bad as this post makes it sound. Otherwise you would be hearing reports about the other part of the population that is complaining about how its so hard to get a date because no ones interested in sex and romance over there... and then theyd be all harping about trying to find someone in another country.
i've heard about this before....its just sad/shocking its gotten worst. but i agree STRONGLY about the media. its most likely not as bad as what the surveys (which are usually incorrect) and "experts" say. something is bound to change.

They brought up everything from Male Escort Bars to Dating Sims to people wanting to live more independent lives away from the traditional "get married young" as to why the Japanese birth rate is shrinking.
I don't live there so I cannot say for sure...but it seems as though it is being reported that people are trying to find themselves...I mean look at that Otaku Takahashi.
I actually feel sorry for him...especially the look on his face 1:00 when he says getting a relationship is too much effort (he face just pales when he says it...does he want a relationship...OF COURSE HE DOES!) Old news. and this article isn't much of an eye opener. Japanese men and women prefer to be single, work, and keep their own income rather than spend it on raising a child. Sometimes when they get married, it's usually under pressure from their parents/grandparents. "When are you going to get married?!" "Where's my grandchildren?!" " I would like to see my grandchild's face before I pass on." Asian grandparents/parents are always like that. MY grandparents are always like that. So in a way, it's good to see that the youth of Japan are actually thinking for themselves rather than succumb to peer pressure.

It's good to be optimistic. However, maintaining a population requires more than 2 children for every pair of adults. This is because even in developed countries, not all children live to become adults and have children of their own. If only two-thirds of the population is even interested in having children, then every family then needs to have at least one additional child, on average, in order to keep the population from shrinking.
Kids are expensive. I know that at my income level, the difference between single with no children and married with children is that I have no financial concerns and can buy pretty much anything I want within reason, whereas I have co-workers who live paycheck to paycheck and voluntarily work 60 hour weeks in order to keep on top of their expenses. Suggesting that everyone with kids should just make more kids is NOT a reasonable proposition.

Being a hermit myself, I can definitely sympathize. Even getting out and meeting someone, to say nothing of building a relationship, is such an uncertain prospect that I'm reluctant to even consider it. But from the video there, I'd say it's less a matter of "no interest" so much as "no hope".

Having been in a relationship where I got yelled at for the very act of being "nice" I can safely say, it made me hate relationships to the point I am hesitant to try again.

Wow, I'm an Otaku and I would never give up personal relationships for Anime. They say they don't want to bother with a relationship, but have they ever actually had one? I have felt no greater joy than love. (Non-virtual)

Guys are just as picky as well. Some of you guys want your potential girlfriend to have same or similar hobby/likes. Some of you want pretty girlfriend. In reality, no one's that perfect.
Wild/bad boys are popular to certain gals because they project their strength and confidence, even though a lot of them are worthless dirt bags.
If you play smart, a right girl will come to you. But don't have unrealistic expectation.

this has been going on for a wile now. The social security system there was nearly bankrupt not to long ago for this same reason. And other then for nutty otakus like us, japan is not a place that attracts migrants. So without varying demographics to change things up, japan will just stay in this rut.
This is way too overboard. Not every single person in Japan is needed to keep their people/race alive. If one third of Japan doesn't care much about sex, then so be it. Geez people. Sex ISN'T life. It's nice once in a while, but no more than that. Plus, its super irritating to hear about it all the time. Love is better than sex people. Ya'll are like animals...

This really isn't about sex. It's about population. If couples aren't having sex and making babies then the population begins to decline. Population decline leads to various problems. The biggest being, that no one is going to be there to maintain Japan's economy or take care of their elderly. Canada is right now suffering from the same thing. It's why they're asking for skilled Mexican illegal immigrants to skip America altogether and go work in Canada under legal work visas. They need that labor to sustain their country. No babies = no future labor. Even if it isn't an immediate problem it WILL lead to the extinction of a race if not dealt with promptly. So, chill out and get off of your abstinence high horse.

I believe the stats are a bit skewed, though. I think a lot of people in Japan are just not very up-front about it when asked in a survey. I think it's a problem, but the magnitude is overblown. It's like if someone were to ask average people if they watch porn or masturbate daily. It's so ingrained into our collective heads as taboo that it's damaging. I think that effect is just magnified in Japan, where being proper and not being "perverted" are matters of necessity practically. The culture is just so different. I don't doubt that a lot of Japanese youth are damaged by this "Ecchi is bad" mantra that gets repeated to them in all forms of media and public interaction. It's no wonder there's so many hikkikomori.
I've read a lot of articles like this about Japan. I think the move away from tradition may play a role but to be honest it is so expensive to live in Japan, who is going to want to have kids and add to that expense. They had a problem like this in the Czech Republic a few years back (might still have -haven't checked) and the gov't starting giving incentives to have kids like giving them money for the kids but it doesn't really sound like they can afford to do that in Japan.

I actually kind of feel the same way to be honest... I don't want kids and I'm quite tired of playing the relationship/marriage/"potential soul mate be together forever" game... I'm so self absorbed in what I'm doing with my life that what I'm looking for is someone who's up for a casual relationship just because of the fact that it's more fun to share your life with someone, even if it's not a big long term relationship... most women I've met unfortunately want the whole package (marriage, kids, house w/ picket fence etc)... so I've turned into one of those people who's come to despise long term deals, don't understand my friends who are getting married and are admittedly unhappy or doing it for their parents or because they feel they have to be in a relationship at all times, etc... and I wait for a girl here and there to come along that I enjoy my time with and basically enjoy life living for myself, my friends and my family.
Point is, I understand the end result that they aren't interested in having kids/relationships... not interested in sex I don't understand (I know it can lead to babies, but I see that as an undesirable outcome that can be avoided)... what I don't get is... I'm 29, and the way I am after years of dating and being in and out of relationships... these are kids who are approaching their prime child bearing years... it goes beyond being dedicated to school or work since you can have those things and have a relationship and kids. To have lost all desire to have kids or a relationship at that age just seems really odd to me...

I may not be entirely accurate but if I remember right marriages and dating and what not have been really rough in Japan for quite some time... I have a friend who's from Japan and I we were going to a party at a mutual friends house... someone on the way over brought up that this girl who is also Japanese and from Japan was going to be there... literally the first words out of my friends mouth were "good, so we're going to hate each other".
Another friend dated a Japanese girl and she had said she didn't like the men over in Japan because they were too effeminate and weak, she didn't find them attractive.
It's probably just years of watching marriages failing around you and self absorption/not wanting to deal with "the game", which at least are my reasons... but still, not being interested in bangin' it out is odd... unless you heavily associate the two with one another.

That's what I've also heard about. My dad told me that in some countries, wealth and privilege are first class factors in a relationship. In other words, girls will date/marry a guy first based on how wealthy they are especially if they own a house. Even if a guy has a great personality, past history with the girl, or very intelligent, he is likely to get rejected if he is not financially stable.

Throw a dress on some and you may not be able to tell the difference in sex. And if you check out some of their stats you see they are tall and very skinny (like 5'11-6ft. and only 160 lbs at most). Not exactly ideal genetic material for survival of the species. Plus the women are getting stronger and more independent, tastes will change.

So what. The whole 2060 thing is just a made up number based on nothing. And all the people interviewed are teens, who said they are not interested in sex. They never said they were not interstd in love or dating, besides people are not supposed to have sex until they are married and by doing so they avoid many social problems that come from having sex left and right. So it seems that Japanese people know how to keep their clothes on until it is the right time to take it off. That makes them better actually than most other nations.

Jeez just by watching that and reading it makes me kinda disappointed......I expected more from them than this. =.= It's good like Anime, manga, and games, but this is just over the top and too much. That would go for females and males both. Plus the girls in Japan they are freaking healthy, fit and beautiful. Why go for fake if you could have real, fit and gorgeous woman?

If the youth in Western society held off from sex, we would not have to worry about a lack of resources and rising prices of.

It's not about population per se. It's about government entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare, all of which depend on an ever increasing revenue stream generated by tax-payers. If something interferes with that -- like, say, a decrease in the number of tax-payers -- then where will the money come from to pay for all those government programs? And since these governments pretty much all operate at a loss, the debt keeps piling up, which means the payments on the interest of that debt keeps increasing... can't pay? Lose your credit rating, and eventually default... like Greece and those other guys in Europe are doing right now.
So, this isn't really about being worried that the Japanese culture will become extinct, this is about maintaining the current socio-economic structure.

Japan actually rates almost dead last in births per thousand at around 8 births per 1000 people... this is not something blown out of proportion by the media... it is merely the re-introduction of an ongoing problem that doesn't look like it's going to get any better with the next generation.

I think it's silly and hilarious that some people think that Japan is "full of beautiful girls" (as if it's more or less "filled with beautiful girls" than some other random country...) Perfectly said lol... eastern Europe is filled with beautiful girls. or at least the ones that are still there tend to be really good looking.
Living with my 3 year old niece has turned me off to having kids all together... right now I can lock myself in a room with headphones on and not have to listen to the holy terror... can't do that when they are your own.

I wonder if it's an affect of having so many people crammed into a space. Overpopulation of the planet and in urban area overcrowding are issues that would only be helped by fewer people having fewer kids. Also there's the studies that show the more education a woman has the fewer children she'll have.
For the record I am american. Anyway, the story is starting to remind me of the disease in Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl where you couldn't see the face of a person of the opposite sex. It seems like same sex dating is becoming more popular now, and I mean more so. To be completely honest if they want more birth, sex isn't required... It is just a matter of finding sperm donors and girls/women who wouldn't mind being the host. Of course then child care is a huge problem.

Japan is already overpopulated, so a reduction in population is a good thing. The reason why a lot of people are upset is due to ECONOMICS -- it's about how their (and our) society is structured, with the young having to carry the old on their backs, usually with very little say in the matter (the old are entrenched in positions of power and make all the important decisions).
In addition to all of this, I hear a lot of women in Japan care about only one thing when looking for a husband: money, as in a stable, high paying job. They wont give you the time of day if you don't have that, and with the global economy the way it is, reaching a point where women will be satisfied with your income is all but impossible, so why bother. OTOH, virtual girls don't care how much you make, and they're programmed to be nice to you, so I can see why a lot of lonely guys turn to them, even knowing that they aren't real.
I don't foresee anything changing in Japan any time soon. I expect that this reduction in population will continue for a while.

I feel the same way as that guy in the video. The idea of trying to find and impress an ideal member of the opposite sex (or even an un-ideal member) would be too hard and a fruitless endeavor. Not like I want anime more than a real person, but it wouldn't be worth the effort to leave a very comfortable lifestyle for.

Ahh.. so many factors. Not everyone is ready to start a family, maybe emotionally, maybe financially, and that's fine. And not wanting a relationship..Well, if a meaningful relationship is one that's headed "somewhere" toward a family, as is often preached, and non serious relations are morally questionable... what do you do? Shut down? Have a standstill? Being too awkward to advance I understand, but to have no interest?

I see more of a correlation to educated population rather than disinterested in sex. The age group selected is the 16-19 year old bracket, which SHOULD not be jumping into relationships involving parenthood unabashedly. While I certainly had the capabilities to be the bread-winner at that age, many people lack the skills or education to do so. Teen pregnancies lead to people living off of minimum wage jobs and welfare, which is not the life I want for my children.
So yes, I am one of those people disinterested in sex and relationships because I'm not making a wage which I feel could adequately support a family. Color me traditional, but I'd rather have a parent dedicated to raising children properly at home than hope your nanny instills virtues whilst you are away.

I find it a bit worrying that the government, and the slant of the report, calls for more dominant men. It implies that feminism is to blame here, and that's not the case. It is partly true that beginning a relationship in japan requires "too much effort": Japan's insane work/school demands leave little time for a man or a woman to grow and nurture a romantic relationship, much less start a family. But Japanese culture complicates things, too, by being rather Victorian/stuck in 1952 when it comes to its' expectations of women: Women are expected to settle down and spend the rest of their lives being the perfect housewife. Hell, Rei Ayanami is considered the otaku's feminine ideal because she lives for the approval of her boys, and is literally both mother and lover to Shinji.

It is just the generations life styles. I believe most of them will be lonely in the future and wish they had more than just their hobbies-- a family. I think the most accomplishing thing to do in life is to raise a family; thats just just my opinion though.

I guess it's natural to draw correlations between sex and childbearing, but many, many people are sex fiends who have no interested in having children. You also see the flipside with certain people uninterested in sex but wanting to have children. I'd say any problems in Japan are less related to sexual interests and more to cultural issues, expectations, etc.
It's not as if Western populations aren't facing a similar issue, just not to the same extent. The baby boomers are getting older and people are having smaller families. Naturally that means more older people verses younger people. Compared to 40-60 years ago, couples are also waiting to have children. Instead of getting hitched and having your kiddlings young, many people are opting to wait until they're semi-financially secure.
I honestly know nothing about Japanese economics and the real state of their population, but I'm in favour to agree with above statements regarding the media blowing this out of proportion. Things aren't likely as bad as they seem, and it's not like we need /more/ humans on this planet.

I have no interest in a relationship either. Well, let me back up a bit - very little interest. I do not want to sacrifice a majority of my time and money toward sustaining the relationship. I will do what I want whenever I want. I absolutely refuse to have children. I can't stand them, would make a terrible parent, and am not cruel enough to inflict the world and a child on each other. Marriage only if a contract can be worked out allowing up to about 25% of income to be put into a personal account that is MINE, regardless of what happens with the marriage in the future.
Could I find a woman willing to put up with that? Maybe if I looked REALLY hard, but that's far too much work for such little chance of success. I refuse to change myself, and see no need to inflict my selfish ways on another.

Heh, it's more of a male side that's disinterested in sex. Having any fantasy you can think of fulfilled digitally will do that, especially when you consider that relationships can be both expensive and a hassle. It just means more pretty girls to pick from when this carnivorous young one makes it there.

Japan's population growth is negative & declining but not at a very fast rate. Here are a few issues as to why Japanese men & women do not marry or bear children. I respect their decision but also worried about the issue as well.
1) Gender roles
When women marries a man it is the man's responsibility to support the family thus so called "Head of the family" = $$$ (expensive) & tiresome (YIKES!!!). Married women are called "Education mothers" means they must sustain the household & raise the children = must quit their jobs & limit their social life (DAMN!!!).
2) Living space
Japan is an island nation thus space is very limited & hard to find accommodations for everyone (CRAP!!!).
3) Basic needs
Do you have any idea how much the cost of living in Japan really is!?

Yes, it was a generalization, but the fact that a huge percentage of the images we see have been digitally enhanced in some way cannot be denied. Unfortunately, I think the real reasons are far more frightening than mere images of one's physicality.
Certain things that are imperative to having healthy relationships (intimate or other) have become twisted topsy-turvy. Self-confidence has been replaced with a sense of entitlement. From what I understand, the biggest reason for fever children being born is the really bad economic present and future for Japan. This country, more so than any other I country in the world, is highly dependent on a steady, well paid job in order to raise a kid and start a family.
We also have the reality of families with only one full time employe. There are still many housewives in Japan and the economic situation that has now risen almost makes that a impossible way of living today.

not really on point, but i think it's kind of funny that the in picture of Japanese men then and now on the then side 3 of the pictures are of Toshiro Mifune. Don't get me wrong completely love him and he was very, very manly. But there were others that could have been put in that picture too, Tatsuya Nakadai, for instance. just a thought

From what i've read it's not that they aren't interested, it's just that they settle for less (virtual world and such). Obviously, people who made those statements never been to a place like Hong Kong where it's even MORE crowded. I've lived in an "island nation" before (Taiwan) and I tell you even though there may be a lot of people and you do have to live in apartments it's not "overcrowded" OR "overpopulated". It's perfectly fine there, I had a great childhood. You guys don't have the correct notion of what overpopulation is.
Allow me to EXPLAIN.
Overpopulation and overcrowding occurs when there is not enough resource to support the population. Even though Japan is lacking in natural resource (arguably the reason its government incurred into China and the rest of Asia before and during WWII... won't get too deep into that topic) there is CLEARLY enough economic and industrial resources to support the population, to give the people of Japan a certain ____standard_of_living____.
Yes, that's the key point. Have you guys thought of a place like Sudan? How about any other random country in or even NEAR the African Sahara? Not only do the people there not have the standard of living, they are STARVING from famine and dying from diseases like AIDS and malaria.
YET, the population in those areas are STILL EXPLODING.

You know, I think this not being interested in sex thing is a form of rebellion. Japan is pretty conservative when it comes to the family, and they frown on anyone going against the flow. It might not be intentional, but by rejecting early marriage and sex it seems to me like they're rejecting the society they have to live in. I mean, just look at the arguments for having babies- to take care of the elderly! It's always about the older generation, not the younger (Eden of the East does a pretty good job of showing that).

Well I do have some Japanese guy friends and some have relationship and some dont and those in a relationship seem not interested in children either. Somehow religion has something to do with that also

All mammals breed to sustain a given population. The less educated and less prosperous human groups in a society breed at higher rates regardless of genetic or social factors. A lack of war, famine and disease in combination with material prosperity will cause any human population to produce fewer off spring. Due to the recent disasters in Japan, we may see a spike in birth rates over the next few months. We just won't know until statistics are released next year.

there are allot of factors involved with include sexual drive during hormonic periods for both genders i'd say between the ages of 15 and 20 not 16 and 19. That as well as how often the media would portray sexual content via advertising. i may say this jokingly but it makes some relevant point: put more victorius secret adds out there. the sexual drive may also be low because the women seem to lack more of the features that are arousing to men in contrast to their "rivals" otaku and anime characters that are just digitally enhanced "eye candy"
