At the end of a concert called "μ's First LoveLive!," it was announced that the LoveLive! series will be animated for an expected release in 2013. What is LoveLive!? Well, that's an interesting question...
It's a manga now (as of December) but it started in the summer of 2010 as something almost like a choose your own adventure magazine story. The premise is that an old/traditional high school, Otonokizaka Academy, is in danger of being changed scrapped (and presumably modernized, reorganized), but to avoid this fate, nine girls band together to spread the school's good name and attract new students by performing as idols.
This project is a joint production with Lantis (music) and Sunrise (animation) so there are real girls involved performing singles that went on sale as CDs and animated music videos. For instance, here is "Bokura no LIVE Kimi to no LIFE," μ's' first single:
Actually, at that time, the group didn't have a name yet. It wasn't until January 2011 that the results of a reader survey revealed that they would be called μ's (which sounds like "Muse" in Japanese, by the way). Fast forward (through the history meticulously recorded by magazine issue on Japanese Wikipedia) and in November of last year their "First LoveLive!" concert was announced. it was held yesterday in Yokohama (with plenty of merch on sale), and now an anime is in the works.
You would think because of Sunrise's participation in the franchise, they would be the ones doing the animation, but there is nothing stated to confirm or deny that—just the expected date range of next year.
As for right now, the 5th general election is underway, commemorating the release of the group's 4th single, "Mogyu to Love ni Sekkinchuu." Votes are being taken through March 10th via the mobile site, post cards, and email to decide the center for the 5th single, and it sounds like there is some other mystery prize as well...
Are you guys excited for an anime about girls who sing and dance to save their high school?
