Retail News Site Names Top Manga Properties of 2011

"Naruto" and "Vampire Knight" continue dominance, "Sailor Moon" creeps in

Comics and genre media retail news site ICV2 has named its top 25 manga properties of the year for 2011. Its charts for top manga, top shonen, and top shojo were compiled based on interviews with retailers, distributors, and manufacturers.

One piece has about 5 times the amount of sales as Naruto in Japan.
There's a big difference in sales between America and Japan.
Everything loses to OP, according to the Japanese (and to me, but hey, I'm just saying :P).

Indeed. I also agree with you, it's just sad that so many people outside of Japan are missing such a fun, heart warming, entertaining and all-round epic story. Oh well. It's their loss.

Of course things in America is very different from Japan.
One Piece was the #1 manga in Japan last year,here in the US it's number 10.And after seeing that shoujo mangas top One Piece,I'm gonna say,"Yup,this proves it.More people in America prefer shoujo mangas."
I don't really care about what manga Americans prefer,even though I live here.It just some list.

More like girls have an easier time owning up to liking manga, whereas guys still seem to have the impression that liking manga makes them dorks beyond redemption. There are definitely more stories for their demographic in manga than in American comics.

Compared to Japan where One Piece sales are greater than numbers 2-7 combined each year. 4kids really ruined One Piece for America.

Other than that, the most surprising one there is Spice and Wolf. I loved it the show and read the light novels, but I wasn't expecting the manga to get any attention at all.

ruined it for me entirely.. hated it when it aired many years ago and i still havnt bothered to check it out.. got up to eps 18 and usopp annoyed the living hell out of me to the point i just stopped. might try again later but been very hard to get started on it so far.

Yeah, the Japanese voices sound much more natural(Luffy still sounds the same and awesome after over a decade :P). Some anime have good dubs, but One Piece... no.
The censoring doesn't help it either, considering how America is overprotective of their kids... though all in all the manga is still the best version.

Gotta love how Sailor Moon is on there because of the re-release, despite it being so old. Awesome!

Also, as usual, sad to see that Negima! is far down the list. I think not enough Americans give that manga a chance. It is truly an epic series, right alongside Bleach, One Piece, etc... - It just has more panty shots :P
