Avatar director James Cameron recently commented to MTV on his long gestating adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's action sci-fi manga Battle Angel Alita. Unfortunately, while priority of the "great kick ass story" isn't quit sunk at Titantic depths, it is below the Avatar sequels.
"'Battle Angel' is just a great, kick-ass story," says Cameron, "..."[But] I see the good that the 'Avatar' franchise can do in terms of keeping a world audience cognizant of our relationship with nature, but doing it in an entertainment context. Ultimately, I think there's more good to be done there than with 'Battle Angel'."
"It would have to be pried out of my cold, dead fingers," he laughs, "but on the other hand I don't want to take it to my grave, either."
The most recent update to the adaptation had Laeta Kalogridis providing the screenplay for the project, which would combine the first three volumes of the manga.
Alita, and it's fololw-up Last Order, are published in North America by Viz.
