Seminal Karate Manga Artist Jōya Kagemaru Passes Away

Artist of much adapted "Karate Baka Ichidai" dies at age 72

Minoru Kubomoto, who illustrated manga under the name Jōya Kagemaru, passed away May 5th at age 72. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer. His work included Karate Baka Ichidai (A Crazy Life of Karate), the story of Kyokushinkai Karate founder Mas Oyama that inspired a 1973 anime series and multiple movie series featuring stars like Sonny Chiba and directors such as Takashi Miike.
