Bullet Ballet Maestro John Woo to Remake Yakuza Classic

Remake of yakuza movie from "Lupin III" director Seijun Suzuki

John Woo, director of Hong Kong heroic bloodshed classics Hard Boiled and The Killer, as well as Hollywood pics like Mission: Impossible II and Face/Off, will produce and direct an English-language update of Seijun Suzuki’s 1963 Japanese yakuza movie Day of the Beast.

Seijun Suzuki directed Lupin III movie Legend of the Gold of Babylon, but is best known for his stylish and irreverent yakuza movies, like Branded to Kill and Tokyo Drifter.

Day of the Beast will be produced through Woo and Terence Chang’s Lion Rock Productions and Nikkatsu Corporation. The movie will coincide with a celebration of Nikkatsu's 100th anniversary.

"This remake is my salute to the great films and filmmakers produced by Nikkatsu's 100 years in cinema history," Woo said.
