EXILE Performer Akira Cast as the New Great Teacher Onizuka

Performer from 14 member male pop group EXILE stars in new manga adaptation, scheduled for July

Akira (real name Ryōhei Kurosawa) from the 14 member male pop group EXILE has been cast as the title character in a new live action adaptation of Toru Fujisawa's school dramedy manga Great Teacher Onizuka. The new drama starts on Fuji TV in July.

Miori Takimoto as Azusa Fuyutsuki
Yuu Shirota as Ryuji Danma
Hitomi Kuroki as Sakurai Ryoko
Yusuke Yamamoto as Toshiyuki Saejima
Haruna Kawaguchi, Sho Takada, Shintaro Morimoto, and Taishi Nakagawa as students


Vertical Inc. has recently begun publishing GTO sequel 14 Days in Shonan, as well as the prequel Shonan Junai-gumi in North America. The original manga, along with its anime adaptation, were released in North America by TOKYOPOP.



Takashi Sorimachi played Onizuka in a 1998 TV series, special and live aciton movie.



Jin Akanishi has been cast in the role, but lost out after a talent agency mess around his marriage to actress/singer Meisa Kuroki.
