VIDEO: AKB48 Morphs Into Veggie Rangers for New Commercial

With a little help from Yasuhiro Nightow of Trigun fame

Unstoppable girl idol sensations AKB48 have a new mission: waging war on bad nutrition in their new guise as the Balance Squad Veggie Rangers!

A new campaign for the Kagome company’s vegetable juice brand "Yasai Ichinichi Kore Ippon" (roughly: "Veggies for the day in one bottle") recasts the girls as a Sentai / Power Rangers-like team of costumed heroes...

For those of you who are moon-lanuage impared, here's the basic gist of the storyline The business person, played by AKB48 member Atsuko Maeda, is about to tuck into a "greedy meal" where the nutritional balance is off. Who should appear in to save her but the 30 sentai heroines dressed in vegetable costumes!

And what costumes they are! Seems they've been designed by Yasuhiro Nightow, creatror of Trigun, no less. Let's take a closer look at both the girls and the duds they are wearing...

Yūko Ōshima is Hou Ranger (spinach)

Yuki Kashiwagi is Kabo Ranger (Japanese pumpkin)
Mariko Shinoda is Tamanegi Ranger (onion)
Tomato Ranger will be played by Minami Takahashi
And best of all, Rino Sashihara transforms into the utterly awe-inspiring Veggie Ranger Robo!!!

In addition to shilling veggie juice, the campaign looks like it's out to steal some Sentai thunder from rival idol unit Momoiro Clover Z, who also make heavy use of Power Rangers-style imagry in their costumes and videos, and to cash-in on the recent hype surrounding the Kamen Rider × Super Sentai: Super Hero Taisen movie. But if the result is more nutty ads like this, then I'm all for it. Plus, veggie juice is good for you!
