Happy Birthday to Gintama's Ayame Sarutobi

Masochist ninja gets a year closer to 30 on June 2nd

Prepare some natto. Light a birthday candle and drip the wax, because June 2nd is Gintama's masochist ninja  Ayame Sarutobi's birthday.

According to the Gintama Wiki, in one of the postscripts in the Gintama manga, Sorachi Hideaki explained why Sarutobi's nickname is Sa-chan. It is actually because Sa-chan is more suitable than Saru-chan, because Saru in Japanese means monkey.

A bit of trivia: the character's last name and jumping talents are homages to Sasuke Sarutobi, one of the original modern fictional ninja.  Sarutobi, whose stories date back to the early 20th century, has inspired countless ninja since then, including in Naruto, where he game his sirname, and again jumping ability, to the third Hokage and his personal name and personality to that series' Sasuke.

In North America, MGM released Toei's Shōnen Sarutobi Sasuke as Magic Boy in 1961, making it the first ninja anime to hit domestically.
