Madhouse to Produce "Btooom!" Anime Adaptation

"Chihayafuru" and "Madoka Magica" episode director Kotono Watanabe steps up to take helm

Looks like rumors of an anime adaptation of Junya Inoue's Gantz/Battle Royale-esque seinen manga series Btooom! are proving true. Madhouse (Hunter x Hunter, Ninja Scroll, the Satoshi Kon and Mamoru Hosoda movies) will be adapting the show. Like newly announced Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, the series is being directed by a woman who worked on Chihayafuru and Aoi Bungaku. In this case, Btoom! director Kotono Watanabe was also a Puella Magi Madoka Magica episode director.

Kousuke Kuroda (Hellsing Ultimate, Highschool of the Dead) will be writing the show.

From Baka-Updates' description of the eight volume ongoing Comic Bunch manga series:

Sakamoto Ryuuta is an unemployed 22-year-old who lives with his mother. In the real world, there may be nothing really special about him, but online, he's one of the world's top players of the combat game "BTOOOM"!

One day, he awakes in what appears to be a tropical island, though he has no memory of how or why he has come to be there. While wandering around, Ryuuta sees someone and calls out for help. The stranger responds by throwing a bomb at him! Now Ryuuta realizes both that his life is in danger and that he has somehow been trapped in a real-life version of his favorite game! Will Ryuuta be able to survive long enough to figure out how and why he ended up here?

Cool bit of trivia: the manga's collections are designed to look like XBox games.
