Japan is going through a Zubora-Meshi (cooking with the least effort possible) boom and it's all because of the manga Hana no Zubora-Meshi. In each volume the main character Hana Komazawa, a 30-year old housewife whose husband has been transferred far away, lives the life of a single again. But not wanting to put a lot of effort into just cooking for herself, in each installment, she cooks at least one extremely-easy-but-delicious recipe.
The story has been running in Akita Shoten's Elegance Eve magazine from June of 2009, and has been a huge hit ever since it started. Counting the second volume that went on sale only last March, the two volumes have together sold more than 500,000 copies!
Now Hana no Zubora-Meshi will be a live-action drama on the MBS/TBS networks to start with the October "Fall" season. Of course, everyone is anxiously awaiting news on who the cast will be, but nothing has been announced yet. It will be a late-night drama with 10 thirty-minute episodes.
The manga is a collaboration between author Masayuki Kuzumi and artist Etsuko Mizusawa, and they each drew a signboard with their reactions to the news.
Kuzumi wrote: D-D-D-D-Drama?! First Kodoku no Gourmet and now Hana-Zubo?! What the heck is going on?! (Note: the manga Kodoku no Gourmet (Lonely Gourmet) also written by Kazumi was turned into a drama last April.)
Mizusawa's note reads: A drama you say?! I hear that Hana's going to TV!! Everybody, this is really big news, right? I wonder if THAT panel will be put on film…. And is that scene okay for TV…. Anyway, I'm so excited I want to say both congratulations and thank you!
How are your cut-corners cooking skills?
