Shokugan (食玩) are trading toys/figures which often come with little sweets/candies or chewing gum. It has been one of Japan's most playful cultural phenomena. Probably the first thing you can notice when you walk in any convenience stores in Japan are the shelves for the latest shokugan toys featuring popular anime/manga characters. And now you can expect more than that.
Amazon Japan has started accepting pre-orders for Takara Tomy ARTS's newest shokugan series "Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream DVD Collection", which will be released on September 17. The shokugan set contains a chewing gum (no mention of its taste) and a DVD of one episode of the Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream TV anime series. The eight episodes from the series (Ep.1, 12, 18, 21, 23, 37, and two more) are in the collection. The price for the eight episodes set on Amazon Japan is 3,017 yen (approximately US$38.26), so that of the one episode box may be around 400 yen
(US$5). It is indeed very cheap price for anime DVD in Japan, and you can also enjoy the chewing gum!
