VIDEO: Sony's "LiveAction" Augmented Reality Tech + Japanese Idols = Amazing

Startling new tech will be used to promote single by Nogizaka46

Wow. We live in a magical age of wonders. Yesterday, we showed you guys a new software demo that could turn 2D hand drawn artwork into 3D objects and today…well…this one just about takes the cake.

Let Sony dazzle you with their new “LiveAction AR” technology, which allows users to interact with a flesh-and-blood Japanese idol (in this case, a member of the group Nogizaka46, "official rivals" of AKB48) on their phones.

So far, most augmented reality gimmicks, like the ones featured in LovePlus, have relied on CGI characters. But this is the first time we’ve seen it done with a real person. Goodbye, uncanny valley! Hello, people suddenly jumping out of objects on the wall (or as the wonky subtitles put it, “Now this girl came into real-world…”)

The ability of this tech to zoom in and rotate around multi-view style is pretty magnificent. We sense a lot of AR advertisements and all manner of unholy uses for “LiveAction AR” ahead (why did Ronald McDonald just pop into my head and rotate around?). And indeed, the tech will debut to promote a new single by Nogizaka46.

But always remember that it all started with a Japanese idol…
