VIDEO: AKB48 Battles Giant Monsters, Ghosts, and Each Other in New PV

New single "Gingham Check" goes on sale August 29

Music videos from the Japanese idol juggernaut known as AKB48 tend to come in two flavors: either very forgettable or mind-scrambling eye candy.

Happy, the new PV for AKB’s latest single “Gingham Check” falls into the latter category, and comes chock full of giant rubber monsters, “bad girl” gangland brawls (Car Devils!), hot blooded police action, and even some J-horror to boot.

Director Joseph Khan, who has also helmed videos for the likes of Lady Gaga, Eminem, and Janet Jackson is said to be a big fan of Japanese pop culture to boot, and the end indeed plays like a love letter to trashy film and TV from the Land of the Rising Sun.

Oh, yeah, there’s also an AKB48 song somewhere in there too…
