Just a little less than a week after being crowned the Kawaii Ambassador of Harajuku, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu of PONPONPON fame is BACK and with a new song to boot.
The decidely Halloween-flavored “Fashion Monster” will be released as a CD single in Japan on October 17th (no word on global iTunes availability yet).
Because pretty much everything in Japan now is calculated months in advance for maximum commercial exposure, “Fashion Monster” is making its debut as the theme song for the Fall / Winter collection for Japanese clothing retailer g.u. (a spinoff of Uniqlo, but even cheaper).
Kyary and her g.u. outfits will be seen in a 200 store-strong campaign across Japan, the spear tip of which is this commercial (labeled as Vol. 1), featuring Kyary in a variety of styles along with other models while “Fashion Monster” plays in the background.
As for the song (written and produced, as per usual by Yasutaka Nakata of Perfume and capsule…basically the Big Enchilada of the Japanese electro scene)… well…I’m not really hearing something with quite the same charm or hooks as PONPONPON, Tsukema Tsukeru, Candy Candy. It kind of sounds a little too much like what it is: a commercial jingle. I'm ok with that, but only as long as the song can stand on its own...

Anyway, I’ll withhold final judgment until the full music video for “Fashion Monster” (currently filming) drops next month and hope for the best.
Meanwhile, you can peruse Kyary’s spooky Fall/Winter g.u. looks at the official “Fashion Monster” campaign site and marvel at her devil horns hairdo and vampire fangs to your heart's content.
