In October, right wing politician Shintaro Ishihara announced he would resign as Governor of Tokyo in order to form a new political party, in preparation for upcoming national elections. Ishihara's reputation with otaku wasn't so good. He pushed for the bill that would restrict sexual content in anime and manga. He also said that the March 2011 earthquake/tsunami were divined punishment for the selfishness of the Japanese people and maligned homosexuals.
Former president of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations and anti-nuclear advocate Kenji Utsunomiya seems a bit more popular with the geek crowd.
Madoka Kaname and QB certainly appear to be backing his run for the office.
