Studio Ghibli's "From Up on Poppy Hill" Tops 2012 DVD/BD Rental Charts in Japan

Son of Hayao Miyazaki is building his career steadily

TSUTAYA, the largest DVD/BD and CD rental shop chain in Japan, announced the annual rental rankings for each category for the 11 months from January 1st to December 7th, 2012. The most rented title in the animation section during the period was Studio Ghibli's 17th feature film From Up on Poppy Hill.


The film was directed by Goro Miyazaki, a son of the famed anime director Hayao Miyazaki, as his 2nd professional anime work in 2011 after Tales from Earthsea in 2006. It earned 4.46 billion yen (about US$56.5 million) at the Japanese box office and become the highest-grossing Japanese film of the year. The English version is scheduled to be released in North America in March 2013.
