Horror Returns to Anime with New "Higurashi" Announced

"Higurashi Outbreak" adaptation announced during 10th anniversary event

At a special invite/ticket give-away Higurashi 10th Anniversary Fan Meeting event, news came that horror is returning to Hinamizawa. A new Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku anime is in the works to adapt Higurashi Outbreak, a short story from series author Ryukishi07 that was included in the original soundtrack for the Higurashi Daybreak doujin third-person shooter.

While a format was not announced, attendees got the impression that it would be an OVA.

Voice actors Souichiro Hoshi (Keiichi Maebara), Mai Nakahara (Rena Ryugu), Miki Itou (Miyo Takano), and Chafurin/Hirotaka Shimasawa (Kuraudo Oishi) were present for the event, which featured live performances by Rekka Katakiri and anNina.

The announcement came late in the event, during an end credit roll, and was followed by a surprise, unlisted appearance by Mion/Shion voice actress Satsuki Yukino, who took the stage to sing "You."

The series of doujin murder mystery games turned anime/manga follows the 1980s outbreak of gruesome crimes and mysterious illness in the rural village of Hinamizawa, mostly involving moe girls with dark secrets.
