Why Square Enix Develops Social Games Instead of Console Titles

The answer is about as obvious as you'd think

There are two things that many people aren't as aware of as you'd think--the first has to do with the insane cost of triple-A video game development. The second is that everybody in Japan is glued to a cell phone at all times.

Look up "keitai culture" in case you thought I was joking

So when Square Enix was asked why they've been focusing so heavily on mobile games lately, Squenix head Yoichi Wada's answer really should come as no surprise.

"In HD games, we usually have a mixture of profitable and unprofitable titles, generating profit as a whole. As for our Social Gaming & Others [division], we only have very few titles that are unprofitable."

With this in mind, Square Enix will be increasing its investment in social gaming development. Don't worry, though--it's not like Square Enix is completely giving up on console development. We've all seen what the Luminous Engine is capable of, so there's hope for the future!

Of course, you can still get up in arms if you'd like--remember that new title Square Enix was teasing, that may or may not have been a new Star Ocean game?

It's a social RPG titled Star Galaxy. And you wonder why I didn't follow up on it.
