Augmented Reality Puts Real Sized SDF1 Macross in Osaka

30th anniversary festivities move to Osaka for the New Year

At around 1200 meters, the transforming space battleship SDF-1 Macross is one of the largest mecha in anime. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the show it gave its name to, it's visiting Hirakata park, Hirakata city, Osaka through the second week of January. The only hitch is that visitors need an augmented reality (AR) smartphone app to see it.

Once visitors download the app from the iTunes Store or Google Play, they can tour the park and view the ship by scanning the posters. Ticket prices include exhibition ticket, entrance ticket for Hirakata park and a Macross neck strap.

The full sized VF-25F Valkyrie transforming jet, previously displayed in Tokyo, is also on site, along with a Macross Cafe where you can enjoy the foods and drinks based on series characters such Ranka Lee and Ai kun curry rice.

A special cosplay day and talk show with Megumi Nakajima (Ranka Lee) will be held December 29th.

New Years specials include fortunes and a chance to win a dharma autographed by director/co-creator Shoji Kawamori.
