Beneath its cute exterior, Nintendo's Pikmin is an unusually hardcore strategy title where little plant-people have sworn their lives to your service and will happily die to protect you. According to the tidbits of info Nintendo has leaked, the upcoming Pikmin 3 will be arriving on the Wii U sometime in the second quarter of 2013.
Nintendo developer and occasional IRL mascot Shigeru Miyamoto talked a bit about Pikmin 3 in a recent interview, going into detail about what the new title's gameplay would be like.
"Our main aim in Pikmin 2 was to get rid of any stress as much as possible, so that it would be very user-friendly. Well, I myself couldn't agree with that direction perfectly. That kind of nature of Pikmin 1 was exactly what I wanted to reproduce and I was actually intentionally doing so, so that Pikmin 1 could be a strategic game."
This probably means that the fast pace and time limits of the original Pikmin are making a comeback--the second game removed time limits, giving you time to explore the massive world that surrounded Captain Olimar. For me, that's kind of a double-edged sword--I appreciate difficulty and urgency in games, but a game like Pikmin also works well at a more leisurely pace. Maybe they'll be able to find a balance between the two styles of play--what do you think?
