Here's one way to encourage kids to behave. In a tradition like the European Krampus or even some versions of Santa, north Japan has the Namahage - yokai monsters that travel around on New Year's, banging on pails and threatening to use their carving knives to cut the leg tendons of naughty or lazy children.
