Sony Puts Worldwide Stop to PlayStation 2 Production

After twelve years, Sony finally puts the PS2 to bed

I remember the exact day I got a PS2--it was just a few days after launch, and I picked up a shiny new copy of Dynasty Warriors 2 to go with it. Time sure flies--twelve years later, Sony is pulling the plug on what is arguably its best video game console yet.

About a week ago, the last Japanese shipment of PS2s left Sony's factory, but that was only the beginning. Just a few days ago, Sony announced that it was stopping production of the PlayStation 2 on a global scale--after moving over 150 million units and boasting a library of over 100,000 games, it's as good a time as any to say goodbye to the little black dress of video game consoles.

Or, y'know... the black velour tracksuit of video game consoles

While it may not have been the most powerful system of its generation (that would be the Xbox) or the most hardcore-friendly (that would be the Dreamcast), the PS2's massive, varied library ensured that everybody could easily find something to love.

What are some of your favorite memories of the PS2? If you have to pick five titles that stand out above everything else, what would they be? Let us know in the comments!
