EVO, or the Evolution Championship Series, is the final stop of each year's fighting game "season," bringing the strongest competitors around the world together to do battle. When the lineup of events for the tournament was revealed, the eighth slot was left blank, to be determined by donation drive.
Well, the results are in, and it looks like twelve-year-old GameCube sorta-launch title Super Smash Bros. Melee will be taking center stage as one of EVO 2013's main events! After the game's competitive community raised a whopping $94,683 (out of a total of $225,744) to be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Melee's unique brand of chaotic combat will get to shine alongside recent mainstays like KoF XIII and welcome newcomers like Persona 4 Arena.
Personally, I was hoping for Skullgirls to pull through, but hey, you can't win 'em all, and Melee's community really knocked it out of the park. Melee will make for some really exciting competition, though, and it's nice for a passionate community to get their game back in the spotlight. Just, y'know... turn the damn items on. It always feels like playing Street Fighter on "one round, 30-second" rules without 'em.
Are you looking forward to seeing Super Smash Bros. Melee bring the house down at EVO 2013?
