Guillermo Del Toro Describes "Pacific Rim" Mecha Pilots and Offers a New Look at Robots

Humanity battles for survival against giant kaiju this July

Guillermo Del Toro recently sat down with USA Today to pitch July's Pacific Rim, which is sounding like a blockbuster existential, last ditch battle between humanity and alien invaders. A group of pilots with be booting up to launch their mecha out of a base called the Alamo to fight off the giant kaiju.


Describing the key characters, Del Toro said Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), who plays a washed-up pilot is: “… a guy who has a very noble heart and a very good presence, but the things he’s trying to surmount are big.” Actress Rinko Kikuchi’s (Brother Bloom) character: “…has a very personal story of destruction with the Kaiju — they basically took everything away from her.” Finally, Idris Elba (The Wire) anchors the cast with Del Toro saying, “He’s not playing second banana. He’s at the center of the conflict. He’s the only guy who cannot give up.”
