Of the Ghost in the Shell anime, the closest to Masamune Shirow's original manga was probably the cutscenes from Exact's 1997 PlayStation 1 game - it was even set in his fictional Newport City. Personally, I thought the third person, 3D Fuchikoma action (yeah, they weren't Tachikomas) was a bit of a pain, but that anime was dazzling.
