It may not exactly be a return to the Nintendo cartoon days of olde, but Shigeru Miyamoto and co. have something special in store for the Pikmin franchise. Miyamoto is overseeing the creation of original animated shorts based on the series, with plans to launch the videos on Nintendo 3DS prior to the release of Pikmin 3 on Wii U.
Miyamoto—who hopes the shorts will "give more life to the Pikmin characters—went into greater detail about the plans when speaking to Polygon.
"We really just want to take advantage of the Pikmin characters," he said. "We have started selling Shaun the Sheep videos, so we're continuing to look at ways to expand the eShop offerings. Nintendo 3DS is great for viewing 3D content, so we're continuing to look at ways to expand that offering."
If the Pikmin shorts prove to be popular, Nintendo might consider selling them, but for now it seems they'll be exclusively viewable in 3D on Nintendo's portable. This is also currently just a Pikmin thing, as Nintendo hasn't decided whether or not they'll end up branching out into animated shorts based on other properties.
