"Gintama" Cast Weeps as Last Japanese Häagen-Dazs Closes

Closure of outlets means the end of exclusive flavors like rice flour dumplings, purple-fleshed sweet potato and red bean paste

Looks like Gintama might have to retire the running gag about Otae's mania for Bargain Dash ice cream as the pricey chain that inspired it prepares to depart the Country of Samurai. Until it closes on April 25th, the final Häagen-Dazs outlet at Shin-urayasu, Chiba will offer a cup-of-three-favorites-for-500-yen special.

The premium ice cream brand will still be available at supermarkets and such, but the closure of outlets means the end of exclusive flavors like rice flour dumplings, purple-fleshed sweet potato (murasaki imo) and red bean paste.

Baskin-Robins, Cold Stone Creamery, Blue Seal, and Ben & Jerry’s can still be found in Japan, and it should be noted that brands like Wendy’s and Burger King have returned after shuttering then reworking their strategies.
