"Slam Dunk'" Author Donates 1 Million Yen Worth of Manga Books to Hometown Schools

46-year-old manga artist Takehiko Inoue, who is well known for his basketball manga Slam Dunk and Real, was born in Okuchi-city (now called Isa-city after the merger in 2008), Kagoshima Prefecture, on January 12, 1967. Isa City Hall planned to set up the Takehiko Inoue library in the 18 elementary and junior high schools in the city to introduce the hometown hero's works to the children, and had already included 1 million yen (about US$10,000) for the project in this year's budget.

 

Inoue soon made contact with the city and offered to donate all the books to the schools by himself. He donated 1 million yen worth of his manga books including Slam Dunk (24 volumes), Real (12 volumes), art books, magazines, and DVDs to the elementary and junior high schools, his old school Okuchi high school, and the city library. The Takehiko Inoue library is scheduled to be set up in every elementary and junior high schools in the city in the course of the month.
