"Pokémon" Dev Reveals Game that Mixes Horse Racing and Solitaire

"Soliti Horse" heads to the Japanese 3DS eShop on July 31

Pokémon developer Game Freak recently teased an upcoming game with the following promise: "That popular game that is played around the world will be reborn in a surprising collaboration!" It turns out the winning combo is Soliti Horse, a game that mixes horse racing with Solitaire on Nintendo 3DS.

Soliti Horse will be Game Freak's first self-published title, and it's heading to the Japanese 3DS eShop on July 31 for ¥500.

The game has players switching between Solitaire Phase and Control phase while racing. Playing Solitaire deepens the bond with your horse and gives them more power, while Control Phase lets you guide them by drawing lines on the touch screen. Hit the final spurt of the race and you'll be able to use collected item cards to whip and propel your horse to victory. Along the way you'll raise your horse, and you can use QR codes to share it with others.

So what's the verdict? Are the folks at Game Freak mad geniuses or just plain mad?
