On today July 31, veteran anime voice actor/narrator Toru Furuya celebrates his 60th birthday! Furuya was born in Yokohama-city, Kanagawa Prefecture on July 31, 1953. He made his debut as a professional voice actor for the protagonist "Kid" in Kaizoku Oiji/The Pirate Prince in 1966 when he was 13 years old. The first anime character made him so famous among the Japanese general public was Hyuma Hoshi in Kyojin no Hoshi/Star of the Giants in 1968-1971 (1st series) and its sequels. He has played various anime characters for more than 45 years, including Amuro Ray (Mobile Suit Gundam series), Pegasus Seiya (Saint Seiya series), Kyosuke Kasuga (Kimagure Orange Road), Yamcha (Dragon Ball series), and Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask (Sailor Moon series). He is no doubt one of Japan's most renowned anime voice actors.
Some fans expect he will reprise his roles in the upcoming Sailor Moon anime remake/sequel and the
Gundam The Origin anime series. At the age of 60, it is true that his voice is still as young as when he
played the characters decades ago.
