Sony Reveals More Details On Smartphone App for PlayStation 4

App to launch on iOS/Android/Windows Phone 8 alongside PlayStation 4

During TGS in September, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhel Yoshida teased a new smartphone app related to the PlayStation 4, but didn't elaborate on it too much at that time so as to take away focus from the Vita TV and cost-reduced Vita. Now, he's gone ahead and let out more info on the app ahead of its release later this year with the PlayStation 4.

PlayStation App 1

The PlayStation App will allow for the following capabilities across smartphone platforms:

  • Send and receive text/voice messages to friends, who can receive them on either the app or the PS4 itself.
  • Receive gaming invitations from a friend on the PS4 to the app.
  • Buy a game on the app and have it start downloading automatically to the PS4.
  • Watch recorded or live streaming gameplay from a friend's PS4 console.
  • Additional "second screen" functionality for games open to all developers

With smartphones, tablets and game consoles offering more opportunities to developers for new gaming features and functionality across platforms, the PlayStation App seems pretty handy to have whether or not you'll take full advantage of all the functionality it initially has to offer. Would you use the app if you're buying a PS4?
